  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I remeber burning up a tank and a half of gas in my 64 Impala convertable in one night. I wished I still had her. :) Yeah, gas was cheap then, I remeber regulat gas at 24 cents a gallon, Sunoco 107 octane was 28 cents. You could actually recognize a car at night in your rear view mirror by its headlights and the glare off the grille. They also has real pretty paint jobs then, it actually shined like a mirror.

I had a '55 Chev that looked something like that, without all the chrome. That was when they did away with the wings on the rear fenders and rounded them off.

Cheers,

Jim

I think thats a 58 right? They had single headlights until 1968. That is a sweet lookin car Rad
That's my baby. Got her 2 years ago and I ride her all the time in good weather. Yep it's a 58 Bel-Air sports coupe. Sports coupe desinates a Carter 4 barrel, dual exhaust and no window colums. She's a stock 283 with original 57K miles and is an older "ground up" restoration from about 10 years ago. She's getting some minor rust around the frount bezel and along the inside of the rear fender. All original or NOS except for the EI.

Jim 1927-----I had a 56 chevy as my first car and it's allmost exactly like the 55 except the rear tail lights are a little larger and the gas filler tube is hid behind the right rear taillight.

John, I got my 55 chev in Alberta, where they don't use salt on the roads. That car remained in excellent condition. When I returned to Ontario, I gave it to another chap who needed a car. I got a different car then in the mid 60's. I don't know how many years it lasted after I gave it away.

I switched to the Chrysler's Valiant at that time. It lasted for 400,000 miles before the body was beyond repair, but the mechanics were in good shape. A young lad took that engine and installed it in a decent frame he had.

Old cars are fun!

Cheers,

Jim

I remember my GrandMa's wringer washer. I also remember there was a lady that lived near by and got he long hair caught in the wringer and it pulled her scalp off, she of course died.

My Mother used a wash tub for the firt 7-8 years she was married as the house we lied in didn't have an electric pump, just the old hand pump. I also remember getting my fingers pinched in it.

One of the biggest things I enjoyed when I was a kid was our tire swing. It hung from a giant evergreen tree that is now gone. My Grandpa also had a nice swing made out of meta A-frame. I spent a lot of time there, swinging and singing. :)

The first wringer washer I remember had a hand crank. If one got fingers stuck, one just turned the handle back. The early electric wringers had a safety release on top. If something too thick went through, the wringers would pop and separate.

I do remember, back in London, mum hanging the laundry out back and the clothes lines ran over the back roadway. Cyclists often got their heads wet from fresh laundry as they biked through the washing.

Cheers,

Jim

Dad made me a swing out of a board and some strong ropes. It hung from a large tree branch and I swung on it for hours. This was out at a place we called, "The Camp" which was actually a cabin we rented each summer. It was on a lake where we fished for catfish with dough balls and sometimes caught turtles. I was six or so.

We had lots and lots of weekend guests coming and going because my parents were so involved in community and church activities. I remember picnics and sitting out by a big fire at night while we sang songs. I got to stay up later at the "Camp" than at home which was then a very big and grown up deal to me.

We had no electricity or plumbing out there. We used kerosene lamps and an outhouse. There was a kitchen pump for water though which must have come from a well...I don't think it was lake water. Every night around 1:30 a.m. a train went by on tracks across the lake and that usually woke me up for a while. Fun days there and good memories except the time I got chased by a neighboring farmer's boar (at least I think it was one) when a friend and I tried to climb over the fence.

That little kiddie was Noddy............no, that was his name.

There was a Canadian radio show we used to get on the BBC for the benefit of the Canadian troops in England during the war.........

It started out with a knock on the door....."Who's there?"
"It's the happy gang!"

"Well, come on in....."

It was a merry sing song type of show and everyone loved it......"

Yes, radio was the charmer years back. I am not so sure to-day. I get so fed up with the bang bang trash on it these days.

Cheers,

Jim
