  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Wow! I actually found a picture of that monstrous contraption!
Can you believe I suffered through this just to be 'pretty', then it didnt work! LOL

Permanent wave machine invented in 1928 by Marjorie Joyner - The first African American woman to receive a patent

Dear McWilliams, :sigh:

I do understand because my mother did something like that, only she used these rags strips and bobby pins to make me long curls. I never had a permanent though because my hair was curly. The effect, however, was not to make me like Shirley Temple, but more like Margaret O'Brien. :)

Okay, old time movie fans, who here besides me remembers Margaret O'Brien? :help: birdie

Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, Maragaret O'Brien: Babes on Braodway...need I say more?

I didn't know Margaret O' Brien was in that movie, but didn't see it.

Margaret was in Meet me in St. Louis with Judy Garland and played "Beth" in the version of Little Women which starred June Allyson and Elizabeth Taylor. My favorite was The Secret Garden with Dean Stockwell (when he was a child). I don't remember Margaret O'Brien with Mickey Rooney, but do recall that Elizabeth Taylor played with him in National Velvet.

Speaking of old movies.... wasn't it more fun to go to the movie back then...when there was only one movie showing and you saw a news reel and a cartoon. Do you remember that the curtain actually went up.

We would even get dressed up to go to the movie. Of course folks don't get dressed up for much of anything anymore.

Oh well...just wandering down memory lane.

I remember Love Me Tender. I went with some teenager girls (I was probably 10 at the time) and they were so giggly and silly...it was only a couple of years before I could identify with their exuberance in regard to Elvis. The movie...I didn't remember a thing about it except all those silly girls.

I took my little brother to a western movie and when one cowboy was holding another forced back over a fence I held a Foley's sack in front of my brothers face to keep him from seeing such violence. He moved the sack and yelled loudly, "Move that sack, I cant see!!" LOL It was tame fare considering what they view today.

You were such a good sister. Mercy, what our kiddos see now is frightening.

A recent visit to a relatives house gave me an occasion, once more, to watch regular TV since we do not have it at home. They tuned in to the family channel... excuse me ....!!! family channel ???...I don't think so!!!

I love that story it reminds me of my big sister telling me to cover my face with my hands and not look when something scary came on the tv or movies. Thank-you God for big sisters.:amen:

Oh that is so true! My daughters saved my life many a day by dragging little brothers off to Kresge's or to the library or just for a city bus ride while I got some chores done, (or took a coffee break)! They took them for haircuts too which was a lifesaver! Not to mention the hours and hours they read to them!
I remember when I brought one little brother home from the hospital another one said, 'Hes our baby for keeps huh mom?' I said, 'Yep, I'm afraid so'. LOL

I remember when we used to celebrate May Day with baskets of candy and flowers . we made the cone shaped ones in school and my Mother always bought the store made ones at Murphy's Dime store. (they were so pretty you punched them out and folded ) then you took them to the door of a friend or a boy if you were a girl. and knocked on the door and ran . if he answered the door he ran after you and tryed to kiss you. the goal was to get away fast if you did not want a kiss.

Oh yes, May Day was such an important day. One year I got to be in the May Pole as we wove ribbons in and out of different beautiful colors. Still have that old picture of me all dressed up in the queens court. What fun!
Also we loved Arbor Day and gathered outdoors to have a ceremony and watch a tree be planted on the school ground! Fun memories there!
My mother usually made popcorn balls for the occasion!
