When Jim1927 mentioned the iceman... it reminded me for some reason of our Twins Pine Milk man.... and how we used Milk shutes to receive our milk..... They were located on the side of the house where the driveway was.....

Milkman recovers '60s magic
Grandson restores truck after driver's 10-year hunt
Bill Chapin / Associated Press

PORT HURON -- Just about anyone who grew up in southeast Michigan in the '50s and '60s knows, as Milky the Clown used to say, "There's magic in Twin Pines milk." But the Knowlton family knows there's some magic in the trucks that used to deliver the milk to doorsteps, too
"Supermarkets really put us out of business," says Mickey Knowlton, looking out the door of a restored 1950s milk truck. The truck has been restored for the Knowlton Ice Museum in Port Huron Township. Knowlton drives a similar truck for a dairy farm.

Oh I remember milk being delivered daily, think Mom used to get 4qts. And I remember the cream used to be on the top!! If Mom was making something special she would take the cream off, if not we would shake it in the bottle and drink it. Funny now how we have to have 2%,1% or skim milk (Yack) no fat no no no. No wonder milk taste funny now.

:wave:I encourage you.... it will make such a wonderful memory....
and I am so happy to share this with my daughter.... I did not think it would get here so soon....

I have raised 5 children.... I could not do the treasure box for all, (I wish I could have) but my other daughter, my last daughter and child at home - has a tool box for a treasure box, plus a hope chest - given to us later.....(The tool box is not as big as the chest) but she will have fun too when she is 21 opening it up. She is 18 now....

My husband grew up on a farm.... they would drink fresh milk right after milking the cow.....
He said that was very thick....

Wow, Mickey, that picture of the cow brings back memories...

But not of the States, but Austria, where I grew up. My mother had a childhood friend we visited in the country. If you can imagine a home and barns built around a courtyard with a gate that shut at night, all built of stone and stucco, walls more than three feet thick, buildings built in the 1600's....And everything built in such a way that it was defendable--

The grandparents lived in a house behind all that, and the grandkids could run back and forth...the young couple ran the farm....And the cows were housed in a barn just across the courtyard from the kitchen.

Milk came from the barn to the kitchen within minutes--and was drunk while still warm...

This Austrian farm is not the place I remember, but its style is close:

My grandparents - my dad's parents - some of our relatives lived in Austria.....
We called them Baba and Zedo or Zeudo..... not sure.... how it is spelled....you may know it means Grandma and Grandpa....
I never have been to Austria... or Italy or Slovakia
where my family is from. The last name was Waliga in the states and Valiga in the old country.

I could 'see' what you were saying and it sounded beautiful. And then such a neat pic of the farm. What precious memories for you....

When I put the pic of the cow... it brought back a memory for me of my Dad.... though he was dying in a VA Hospital... (served in WWII) he looked out the window and there were cows grazing....
He told my mom when he got out he would show her how to milk a cow. They had been married over 50 years...
It was sweet. He died soon after. I bought my mom a stuffed toy little cow to remember his wish....

We do not have anything dated in the 1600's where I live....
My home is about 120 years old... old farms and barns still in the village. There is a hitching post for horses behind my neighbors barn....that is about it... and once and awhile old bottles will come out of the ground...

My husband grew up on a farm as I shared before. When they sold it, they came out even. The farm supplied them with life and they came out without a profit, but not in debt. The one thing I remember, when we were first married, is my husband braiding my long hair....(not long anymore)
He did a great job! He use to braid his cows tails when they would take them to the fair. I loved it!

Wow, Mickey. You and I have much in common...

My mother's family is from Moravia in what is now the Czech Republic, a little town called Feldsberg, to be exact. When we lived in Austria, we would sometimes drive to the border and look at that town in the distance. We couldn't cross the border--it was the days of the Iron Curtain, and I remember looking at the guard towers near us and wondering how many guns they had trained on us...

I just Googled Feldsberg, literally translated "field mountain." The town has been renamed "Valtice." Here's a picture I found of the woods nearby....but I can't seem to find one of the town.

When the iron curtain fell, my mother's family had the right to go back and claim property that had been confiscated. None of them did. Everything was run down. People who visited the area said that the Communists had raped the land, polluted its streams and left it in as an environmental disaster. I don't know if this is true. But looking at the picture, I can understand why my mother still talks about her childhood with dreamy eyes.

What a story Ariel. And to have looked at the Iron Curtain and have the thoughts that you had.....
It brings tears to my eyes...

I have never lived as that.... in that kind of fear...wondering about guns looking down at me.

God bless you Ariel......
What a beautiful picture....

I was looking at pics of Ellis Island. My grandmother,
Baba - would always wear a babushka......and so would my Italian Grandma....

I agree,
cffosterangel31...it is fun to meet everyone and share. It is amazing what we learn and things even countries apart we have in common.....

I am so excited.... we had a wonderful time...I have cried alot this week, including today.
I hope you don't mind me sharing all this... my last daughter is graduating and I have gone through many pictures...and then today.... tears of joy sharing this trunk that I have been filling for 21 years for my other daughter....

The funniest thing was finding that years ago I bought 40 cards of a mysterious baseball player..... the same picture. I could'nt believe it. I hope I did not pay alot.
I cannot get over all the baseball cards I bought... and stuck away. I saved everyone from cereal boxes etc. Some were circle baseball cards.... lots of fun. Lots of stamps and coins....
Also her little socks... that made me cry....

I am downloading pictures.... as soon as I can I will post them....
