Yes, I remember when...I was just learning to ski in Austria, and these little kids would come schussing down the hill, putting me to shame...

I would be laying on the hill watching the little kids go over me!!! Never skied!! Good for you!!

I am not a great skier, injured foot and ankle from a few years ago, but we went last weekend.... and it was good timing.... all the snow in Michigan is gone. Well, it was gone... and I woke up early this morning and it was on the ground again after 70 I believe weather yesterday or the day before....

But, sking, we had not gone in many years......

How about sleds? I have a few tacked on my big, long, porch.....

this is one of the big ones.....

Also for my daughter's 21 birthday.... we kept an old trunk and put things in it over the years..... she will be 21 in a few days.... I am so excited to see her go through all the stuff....it is a hump back truck......

Looks like this, but ours is a little cleaner.......though I did not paint it or anything.... just cleaned it up with wood cleaner.....

wow what a good idea for a birthday!! I never thought of anything like that! Maybe I could start something like that for a special grandchild birthday. Thanks for the idea.

Those are the kinds of trunks we used to move to Canada years ago...all our possessions!

I also gave my older daughter a milk mug with a whistle in handle my grandmother gave to me when I was three...antigue!

I just love the chest idea!

In Germany, my German female cousins each had a "hope chest" they collected precious items in as they were growing up. The idea was that when they married, they would already have some dishes, tablecloths, bed linens, etc.

When I married, I had a husband I loved dearly, but not much of anything else. I could have used a hope chest!

Actuallly it is a 'treasure chest' kind of like a hope chest....
But, full of treasures from before and through my Olivia's life..... we did not do it for all the children... but they all have some things that were given to them, that the others did not receive.... kind of a balance....especially when you have older and then younger children..... his, mine, and ours, though my husband made all his children.....as I.
She has old cigar football cards in the trunk..... stamps..... things like that... and many trading cards..... I am not sure all, but we will see soon.

These are kind of the cards we have.... I do not remember all their names....

I will look at them and share their names.... my other daughter wants to know also......

Another investment for my daughter was a doll - called an Alma Doll.....she is signed on the back - leather body - beautiful blue dress, it is very old ....

My computer is acting up.... I cannot find a picture for her....

It seems almost like a time capsule as well as a treasure chest. Yes, old things would have sentimental value. But even new things will age over time...

Even clothing, or pictures she drew as a child, or a poem she came home with as a fifth-grader...

I was so excited to share my daughter opening up her trunk.... but she has been too busy with college and her birthday celebration night was too busy to do it.... soon I hope. I have a week off from school for Easter break...

Anyway, my daughter in law admired my old refridgerator.... not knowing if you have talked about them before....

"These early refrigerators did not require electricity. They were lined with porcelein or metal and held large blocks of ice. Several local companies provided ice for the family's ice box. When family homes were wired with electric, the old wooden iceboxes were often thrown away or burned. Today these items are becoming rare."

Wow. Hence the name "ice box." I always wondered why some people called their refrigerators that.

I remember walking to the store with my sister in the 50's and coming home with penny candy that cost a penny and a 10 cent soda pop.

And going to McDonald's in '66...a hamburger was 37 cents.

And gas...when gas prices hit above a dollar in the 70's, we thought the world as we knew it was just about over!

My Grandparents had one of these in use for awhile, later stored stuff in it.

Lady around here has one of these and she said she found it and redid it and it is used for storage, it is beautiful

I don't recall ever seeing an icebox in ENgland. We mostly bought groceries every day. We also had root cellars for storage.

I do remember seeing that icebox when I came to Canada though, and the iceman delivering ice every week right into the mid fifties.
