In Malachi 4:5-6,
"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse''.
Do you believe this is a reference to John the Baptist (who is compared to Elijah in other parts of the bible), or Elijah himself? I believe this passage refers to Elijah himself coming back in the end times, for several reasons. First of all, the Old Testament does reference the end times in other passages (like Daniel mentions the Antichrist), and the day of the Lord is mentioned in Peter in the NT (in the clear context of the end times).
