Divorce due to abuse

I haven't seen too much text from Scripture. Here is some, which I read today as part of my devotion.



The plain teaching is that a wife should not leave her husband, and if she does, she must not remarry.



While Paul teaches that is better to marry than burn in this passage, he was evidently speaking to people who were Scripturally eligble to marry. Later in the passage he makes it clear that if a woman left her husband, she was not to remarry (vs 11), and then on a little way, Scriptures teach that a woman was only free to remarry if her husband was dead (vs 39). That is repeated in Romans.

well, its killing me here, so I guess I have to do it....

Are YOU able to cast the first stone at one of our young women who has divorced over abuse and remarried ?

Please, we know the rules........we all live by them, or try our best to.........but you who teach not to steal, do YOU rob temples ?

I tell ya, Id love to dig around in the closets of a couple folks here.....

I don't think anybody was condemning anybody else Follower, but there was a scriptural question posed - and it was answered, with a passage from scripture. Is that really a problem? Nobody was casting any stones. If somebody asks if it's alright to steal, do we say nothing because we have sins in our past? No, as christians, we are supposed to hold each other accountable, and make sure each other don't stumble in our walks with the Lord.

Wow, so following the letter of the law and not the spirit seems to lead to this--wife leaves monsterous, abusive husband, does not remarry, waits and wishes said monster drops dead to free her. Does this not seem to be leading her to commit murder in her heart? Or maybe she should hope that he goes to some other woman and commits adultery so that now she can be free, now she's hoping he'll commit more sins to end this relationship. Seems to me that she should get free of this evil one, and pray that he is forgiven and that she'll someday be able to forgive him for destroying her trust.

Or perhaps people should take more care in who they marry? I know some men and women just pull a total 180 after marriage, but I think many horrible relationships could've been avoided in the first place, if people wouldn't be in such a rush to marry, or would do a better job of critically examining their potential mates.

well, I think i can empathize with the young woman reading this thread who is remarried after leaving her previous husband (for lack of a more suitable word) and her feeling that maybe she has commited some unpardonable sin.

and as for holding each other accountable to the precise letter of the law ..........I'll add this.



Do you allow your women to speak in the church?

(1Co 14:34) Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

Do you give all that you own to the poor?

(Mat 19:21) Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

Or are we accepting something somewhat less than ''perfect'' in things.


Do YOU tolerate men with long hair?

1Co 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

or women with short?

1Co 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

Come now........Im sure i can dig up more now.......are we holding each other accountalble or not?

Do you want to be perfect?........then why havent you given that which you own to feed the poor?
Or do you justify NOT doing that for some reason?

Or is it that there are circumstances in life that we have to do the best we can with and pray to God that He understands and forgives as He has promised us.......

Am I nitpicking now........ are we to follow the bible to the letter or not ?

Im holding you personally accountable to these brother.......where do you stand ?

Yes, I'm sure people want to marry abusers. Sometimes things like this just don't come to light until you're living with that person. Or, they don't even show up until after some years of marriage. I agree that it's not a good idea to rush into marriage, but it sounds like you are blaming the abused for their situation. Please, have a little compassion.

Dont you know that those are only for the abuser to receive from his wife from the ground where he knocks her..... (rolls eyes)

I gave you some passages from Scripture that speak about the issues raised. Don't shoot the messenger. Our aim should be to have a clear appreciation of what Scripture says, and live by it. I do not see you showing the care and respect that the Scriptures deserve.

And as I asked before.........HAVE you given your possesions to feed the poor?
HAVE you stifled ALL of the women of your church?
Have you rejected the long haired men around you?

for you or anyone who wishes to pass judgment on this or some other young girl who has made mistake in her life and is now living in the aftermath and trying to make a life for herself......... I agree with the words of our Lord.......Let YOU who are without sin cast the first stone..........

Another issue is that some of our ignorant brethren have made this remarriage thing some eternal sin........perpetual.......

Jesus gave us instruction on ONE eternal, unforgivable sin.

I really wonder about folks.

I wonder how hypocritical they would be if I were married to their daughter and beat her into a blood-soaked mess and she went home to them fearing for her life..........
and then later found a man who would take care of her and lead her into a godly life........

These folks talk the talk, but I doubt seriously they would walk the walk when it came to seeing THEIR little girl able to find some peace and happiness with a man wanting to live in a godly relationship with her.

No, Jesus did not. Jesus gave one unpardonable sin. There's a huge difference in what you are trying to say. For a literalist, you're going to have to do some more studying to become credible.
