  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am from SC, and I guess because of the old Southern idea of being a lady, breastfeeding in public was not seen as lady like. Phooey!

With my first, I let what others say while I was breastfeeding really get to me. With my next two, I didn't bat an eye b/c of comments and occasional stares. If my baby was hungry while i was shopping, I would find a bench, and start feeding them. I would cover the baby if I didn't have a nursing shirt on.

My mom was the worst at critisizing me while I breastfed in public. On two different occasions, my mom asked me if I would go to the car, or the restroom to feed. It was embarassing to her.

I would just tell her that we were comfortable nursing where we were. I was not about to take my baby to a bathroom to feed. I also wouldn't take the baby to the car b/c it was like 90-100 degrees outside, and 100% humidity.

I just don't get this, why people want to send the most vulnerable of us, our babies, to a bathroom or car to eat. Would any of these people who would have us feed our baby in the car want to sit in a car and eat in 100 degree weather? There's no point starting the car cos by the time the temperature gets comfortable the baby is done eating. And would any of these people want to be in the bathroom even for the length of time it took for them to eat a candy bar or something? I just don't see why people think it's acceptable to send babies to these places. How sad that their hang ups effect their reasoning and common sense like this!

According to the two young women who spoke up to me, they view it as a body funtion, along the same lines as going to the bathroom or blowing one's nose, in other words dirty. Which is why they feel they have the right to ask babies to eat in the car or bathroom.

That is so sad Linnis.
So is a baby letting gas, those stink right away. Should we go into the bathroom though the whole sermon to wait for that wrinkle on the baby's forhead and red face to happen?

By thier immature thinking or the fact they were raised in a very modest household, doesn't make thier opinion correct. In fact, it is just what it is, thier opinion. :) I know that I would remind someone that my opnion is as long as I am covered up and no one knows, I am not going to move because someone yet again distorted something God intentioned to make to be a beautiful experience.

I nursed my babies in church and no one even realized it. I sat in the last row (just in case I needed to exit quickly if the baby got loud), but I'd sit there and nurse discreetly. 9 times out of 10, if anyone even Bothered looking, they thought I was holding a sleeping baby. ;)

I did invest in nursing dresses/tops for nursing in public. Motherwear.com has a sale going on right now too.... and their stuff is really good quality (in case you want to check them out). It's too hot here in El Paso to throw a blanket over the baby while nursing, so that's why I got nursing dresses & tops. It was WELL worth it for me. :)

Well here in South Africa public breastfeeding is not really common, so my choice will definitely be to breastfeed only in private, or find somewhere private to do it. But that's a different question from the OP's post, which is about whether or not breastfeeding is natural. I'm stunned that anyone can think otherwise! Whether you WANT to breastfeed or not is a different question, but I would have thought that the women who choose not to breastfeed would at least realise that they're choosing a 2nd best option??
