In Christ we find troubled waters calm!
I am from SC, and I guess because of the old Southern idea of being a lady, breastfeeding in public was not seen as lady like. Phooey!
With my first, I let what others say while I was breastfeeding really get to me. With my next two, I didn't bat an eye b/c of comments and occasional stares. If my baby was hungry while i was shopping, I would find a bench, and start feeding them. I would cover the baby if I didn't have a nursing shirt on.
My mom was the worst at critisizing me while I breastfed in public. On two different occasions, my mom asked me if I would go to the car, or the restroom to feed. It was embarassing to her.
I would just tell her that we were comfortable nursing where we were. I was not about to take my baby to a bathroom to feed. I also wouldn't take the baby to the car b/c it was like 90-100 degrees outside, and 100% humidity.
