I don’t see them as a farce so much unless they are used to goad. They are convenient and many of us use them but I tend to think that cut off conversation that could be had. Most of us take the lazy way out. I’m guilty of it myself.

I agree with Plover. It's really the only way that the community is allowed to signify the quality of certain posts, and it gives a great deal of information about how many voices reflect a certain viewpoint.

If you are not happy, just don't use the buttons, and then the rest of us can enjoy them. :)
True. I don’t think any of us are really losing any sleep over it. My only concern is it tends to limit conversation when you could post your reaction to a post instead of pushing a button and moving on to the next topic.
