Brothers and sisters, happy Sabbath! As I see it, Jesus made 3 of His commandments more demanding in the new covenant and added an 11th commandment for a total of 11 commandments as the minimum love that God wants us to show God and neighbors.

“You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell. (Matthew 5:21-22 NLT)

Above the 5th commandment and below the 7th commandment.

“You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. So if your eye—even your good eye—causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your hand—even your stronger hand—causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. (Matthew 5:27-30 NLT)

Above the 7th commandment and below the 4th commandment, where "another day of rest still to come", refer to the Sabbath not as the seventh day of the week everywhere, but the seventh day of the creation week remembered in the creation time zone.

So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.” Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall. (Hebrews 4:6-11 NLT)

After surpassing the previous requirements of the three commandments above, Jesus added an 11th commandment below.

So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” (John 13:34-35 NLT)

The same word above for commandment in the singular is used in plural below.

“If you love me, obey my commandments. (John 14:15 NLT)

I don't think what Jesus said should be taken super literally. I used to beat myself silly when I felt that temptations were sin. I'd actually use these verses to justify my own self-flogging. I just don't see it that way anymore. He was pointing out that people would pass judgement on others for doing something outwardly, while inward they were just as guilty of sin. It's a condition of the heart, which highlights the need for all to repent.

As far as the new commandment, it's not adding to the 10 to make 11. It's summing up how to keep the 10 by honoring this 1.

Matthew 22:34-40 ESV 34But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38This is the great and first commandment. 39And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Galatians 5:14 ESV For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Love for God is expressed in our love for others. If we love God we fulfill the law.

These are a part of Jesus' teachings which are called "hard".

Jesus taught these to show how utterly impossible it was for people to merit salvation by "following" the Law.

Jesus says ... "You think that you avoid the sin of adultery by keeping your zippers zipped, ... BUT I say that if you even consider such sin, ... you are not blameless."

Jesus says ... "You think that you avoid the sin of murder by keeping your hands to yourself, ... BUT I tell you that you can murder with your WORDS."

Jesus shares these truths to convey that ALL need GRACE for salvation ... due to the paltry quality of their works ...

Brother, happy Sabbath! Where is it written that this "new commandment" replaces the previous ten commandments? The new commandment is the "one thing you haven't done" Jesus says below while keeping the previous ten commandments.

Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: “Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.’” The man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” When Jesus heard his answer, he said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Luke 18:18-22 NLT)

Above, Jesus introduced the requirements of the 11th commandment in the new covenant that surpasses the old covenant by requiring more than the old and not less than the old. It is humans who want to do less, when Jesus expects more of us. The "overwhelming glory" of the 11 commandments over the previous "glory" of the ten commandments.

The old way, with laws etched in stone, led to death, though it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses’ face. For his face shone with the glory of God, even though the brightness was already fading away. Shouldn’t we expect far greater glory under the new way, now that the Holy Spirit is giving life? If the old way, which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way, which makes us right with God! In fact, that first glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the new way. So if the old way, which has been replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new, which remains forever! (2 Corinthians 3:7-11 NLT)

Brother, happy Sabbath! Despite the "paltry quality" of our works, Jesus still asks us to obey His commandments. All of them! Including the Sabbath rescued from human tradition in Hebrews 3 and 4, under the new covenant with Jesus as our High Priest.

The situation with the rich young ruler is just Jesus pointing out to this individual that their heart was not right with God. Again, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, and strength. This rich young ruler had placed his wealth, and by extension his faith, in his riches and until he gave that up he was still lacking. Even though on the outside (Keeping all the 10 commandments) it appeared he was in right standing with God.

It's all about our heart.

Brother, "Jesus felt genuine love for him", when he said, "I've obeyed all these commandments since I was young". He fulfilled the requirements of the old covenant, but the new covenant demands more: the 11th commandment. If this person had died before the new covenant, he would have fulfilled the commandments when there were only 10 commandments before Jesus.

As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’” “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Mark 10:17-21 NLT)

Happy Sabbath. The thread title askes if Jesus surpassed three commandments, but your poll is missing the option for "no" or "none of the above". Jesus was born under the law (Galatians 4:4), so he was obligated to obey it, and he was sinless, which means he never broke it, and that includes Deuteronomy 4:2, which prohibits adding to or subtracting from God's law, which means that he did not make any changes to it in disagreement with what the Father has commanded. The position that Jesus made changes to God's law is the position that he sinned and is therefore not our Savior.

Whenever Jesus directly quoted Scripture, he preceded it by saying "it is written", but when he was quoting from what the people of his day had heard being said, he preceded it by saying "you heave heard that it was said", so his emphasis on the different form of communication is important. The NLT saying you have heard that our ancestors were told again places the emphasis on what they hard heard about what our ancestors were told rather than on what they were actually told. So Jesus was not sinning in violation of Deuteronomy 4:2 by making changes to what was written, but rather he was fulfilling the law by correcting what the people had heard being incorrectly taught about what was written. Not being angry with our brother brother is in accordance with Leviticus 19:17, not surpassing what was written.

If we correctly understand what is being command by the 7th Commandment against adultery and the 10th Commandment against coveting in our hearts, then we will not look at a woman with lust in our hearts, so again that is not surpassing what was written.

In Hebrews 3-4, they did not enter into God's rest because of their disobedience and Ezekiel 20:13 specifically mentions that they greatly profaned God's Sabbaths. In Hebrews 4:9, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, so we should still be keeping the 7th day holy in obedience to what God has commanded. Furthermore, in Hebrews 4:11, we should strive to enter into that rest so that no one may fall away by the same sort of disobedience, so that passage should not be used to justify profaning any of God's Sabbaths. The 7th day Sabbath, the Shmita year, the Jubilee year, and the eternal rest are all part of the same fractal pattern.

United in our hope for the soon return of Jesus, Jorge

In order to correctly obey the commanded to love our neighbor as ourselves, we need to know how we should love ourselves, and we should love ourselves as Christ loves us, so that is also how we should love our neighbor. The Greek word translated as "new" refers to newness with respect to quality rather than to respect to time, so Christ was not giving a brand new command in violation of Deuteronomy 4:2, but rather he was teaching how to correctly obey the command to love our neighbor as ourselves.

3501 /néos ("new on the scene") suggests something "new in time" – in contrast to its near-synonym (2537 /kainós, "new in quality").

Also, FYI, the 6th Commandment is the one against murder, not the 5th.

The Mosaic Law was made obsolete when the Temple curtain was ripped from top to bottom when Jesus died on the Cross. This is because it was the Law of sin and death. So anyone trying to keep the Law as the way to be acceptable to God is still in the bondage of sin and death.

The new Law is the law of the Spirit and life in Jesus Christ. It is the Law written on our hearts and it not only involves outward conformity but also internal thoughts and attitudes.

The observance of a special day (Saturday) as the Sabbath, is part of the Law of sin and death. It is composed of mainly an outward observance. When a person has been set from from the Law of sin and death by the Law of the Spirit and Life in Christ, they enter into their rest in Christ from works to gain God's acceptance, and this rest in Christ is now the true Sabbath rest and does not involve any special day, but is a continual rest in Christ that goes right on into eternity when we will be in glory with Him.

Those who insist on observing the Sabbath Saturday as a particular day of rest are preferring the Law of sin and death Sabbath over and above the rest through faith in Christ. In fact, they are denying that there is a rest from works through faith in Christ. This means that God is still requiring them to keep the Law of sin and death perfectly, and any infraction of that Law will result in condemnation at the Judgment.

Also in fact, the rest in Christ is the result of true conversion to Christ, and a person not entering into that rest, but maintaining the Saturday Sabbath as their day of rest is showing that they are not yet converted to Christ.

Brother, happy Sabbath! We humans cannot add to God's law, but God can!

“And now, Israel, listen carefully to these decrees and regulations that I am about to teach you. Obey them so that you may live, so you may enter and occupy the land that the LORD, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. Do not add to or subtract from these commands I am giving you. Just obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you. (Deuteronomy 4:1-2 NLT)

The ten commandments were written by Jesus before the incarnation. The form of the finger of God that wrote them in stone was not the finger of the Father.

And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, (John 5:37 NIV)

this rest in Christ is now the true Sabbath rest and does not involve any special day, but is a continual rest in Christ that goes right on into eternity when we will be in glory with Him.
Brother, happy Sabbath! According to Hebrews 3 and 4, we keep God's "rest" holy by entering the Sabbath at the appointed time and not entering any other time. The "rest" spoken of in Hebrews 3 and 4 "has been ready since He made the world". God did not give them this "rest" for 40 years with Manna, them keeping a seventh day Sabbath from morning to morning which was correct in Eden, but not near the Promised Land until they reached the Promised Land and kept a Sabbath from evening to evening that is not a day of the week as defined in Genesis from morning to morning and confirmed below, because the Sabbath remembered is in the time zone of creation.

long after the Sabbath (evening), as it dawns beyond Saturday (morning), came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, to see the tomb. (Mathew 28:1, my own translation)

361381_ff7aae7ab7169d40699276fc6f90eac7.png

Although God gave them His Sabbath in the Promised Land, under Joshua they did not understand the "rest" of God's Sabbath to keep the Sabbath outside the time zone of the Promised Land. To correct this misunderstanding since Joshua, "God set another time for entering His rest, and that time is today", in the new covenant with the call in Hebrews 3 and 4 to keep God's true Sabbath "rest". The "rest" that God wants us to enter "today", in the new covenant when believers find themselves living outside the time zone of the Promised Land, "has been ready since He made the world".

For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience. (Hebrews 4:8-11 NIV)

Brother, happy Sabbath! Where is it written that this "new commandment" replaces the previous ten commandments? The new commandment is the "one thing you haven't done" Jesus says below while keeping the previous ten commandments.
where is it written that the 10 commandments transcend the covenant they are written in? covenants are exclusive to the community they were made for, they may be based on universal constructs but they themselves are not universal, this should be assumed and saying the law doesn't extend outside of it's boundaries shouldn't be controversial.

it would be better to look at the law's constructs and view them as universal over the law itself that is defined for a specific time/place. That construct has been revealed to us by Christ such as in Mat 22:37-39 "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself." I know this is the construct of the law because Jesus tells us so in vs 39 saying "All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

The law is based on this construct and this is what we should look to as transcending the covenants since Christ himself say the law hangs on them where the 10 are limited to time/place which is why they are called the tablets of the covenant law (Ex 31:18) and are placed in the ark of the covenant, these point to covenant boundaries, not universal. Christ himself shows us better examples of some of the 10 in Mat 5 retiring the these laws and also disqualifying them as being universal (since they change). the 10 points to Christ, they still point to Christ but we don't need to look to the 10 to see Christ. There was a time when the 10 was the only option, but now we can go directly to Christ and be complete in him in a way the 10 could never do.

Brother, happy Sabbath! The two greatest commandments are the goals and not how to achieve the goals. The following is a summary of what is achieved by the commandments. They do not tell you how to love God and neighbors like the actual commandments they summarize. These two are different from the 11th commandment in that the 11th does actually show us how to love by giving us an example of how to love God and neighbors in the life and ministry of Jesus.

“Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:36-40 NLT)

The fact that Jesus made three of the ten commandments more demanding shows that they continued in the new covenant when He added the new one. What is "new" about this added commandment is that we have the life and ministry of Jesus as an example to imitate. In this new commandment, Jesus is our example of how to love, but before having Jesus as an example, God gave 10 commandments for the minimum love He wanted us to show God and neighbors.

So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. (John 13:34 NLT)

United in our hope for the soon return of Jesus, Jorge
