He fulfilled the requirements of the old covenant...
Brother, happy Sabbath! I don't think he had kept all of the laws. He thought he had, but he hadn't realized the depth of the commandments.

He senses that there was something missing, that he didn't have eternal life. Jesus sets him on the right course.

Even selling all of your possessions won't get you eternal life, but in this man's case, I think it put him in a position where he could accept the risen Jesus as the Messiah later on.

Brother, happy Sabbath! The young man must have realized that the Ten Commandments are a minimal display of God's "glory" and more can be done as Paul tells us in the following passage.

He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant (Eleven Commandments). This is a covenant not of written laws (Ten Commandments), but of the Spirit (reminding us to follow the exemplary life of Jesus). The old written covenant ends in death (sabotaged by human effort as in the story of Hagar); but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life (reminding us to follow the exemplary life of Jesus). The old way, with laws etched in stone (Ten Commandments), led to death (sabotaged by human effort as in the story of Hagar), though it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses’ face. For his face shone with the glory of God, even though the brightness was already fading away. Shouldn’t we expect far greater glory under the new way (Eleven Commandments), now that the Holy Spirit is giving life (reminding us to follow the exemplary life of Jesus)? If the old way (Ten Commandments), which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way (Eleven Commandments), which makes us right with God! In fact, that first glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the new way (Eleven Commandments). So if the old way (Ten Commandments), which has been replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new (Eleven Commandments), which remains forever! (2 Corinthians 3:6-11 NLT)

He wanted to know if he had to do more than the Ten Commandments or were the Ten commandments enough to inherit eternal life? Jesus' transition, beyond His answer to "keep the commandments" , with "if you want to be perfect" shows they were enough under the old covenant, but Jesus is here to lead us into the new covenant and there is one more commandment He adds to the new covenant to "follow" His example, not possible before Jesus making the "glory" of the new covenant "much more glorious" with Eleven Commandments than the "glory" of the previous Ten Commandments.

Someone came to Jesus with this question: “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” “Why ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. But to answer your question—if you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments.” “Which ones?” the man asked. And Jesus replied: “‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “I’ve obeyed all these commandments,” the young man replied. “What else must I do?” Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Matthew 19:16-21 NLT)

Brother, happy Sabbath! Do you believe there are only 11 commandments in the New Covenant? United in seeking God!
Brother, yes! The minimum growth to show the glory of God in our character is the Eleven Commandments, as Jesus tells us in the following passage, with "there is still one thing you haven't done" after answering the question with "you know the commandments".

Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: “Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.’” The man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” When Jesus heard his answer, he said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Luke 18:18-22 NLT)

To "follow" Jesus above is consistent with His new Eleventh Commandment to do "Just as I have" shown, in this next passage, not possible before Jesus.

As soon as Judas left the room, Jesus said, “The time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory, and God will be glorified because of him. And since God receives glory because of the Son, he will give his own glory to the Son, and he will do so at once. Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer. And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me, but you can’t come where I am going. So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” (John 13:31-35 NLT)

All Eleven Commandments are tied together below with the same word above for commandment in the singular, written in the plural in the next passage, telling us that it is added to the previous Ten Commandments and does not replace the previous Ten Commandments. In fact, since Jesus obeyed the Ten Commandments and we are to "follow" His example in the Eleventh Commandment, all of the previous commandments are included in the Eleventh Commandment. Jesus' new commandment surpasses His previous commandments in the new covenant with an additional commandment that was not possible before Jesus: to "follow" His example.

“If you love me, obey my commandments. (John 14:15 NLT)

Brother, not before Jesus when there were only Ten Commandments written in stone by the finger of God as the minimum love God demanded we grow to show to inherit eternal life.

Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: “Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Only God is truly good. God has an obvious minimum and maximum in the following passage, where it is also made clear that more is required of the new covenant than of the old covenant. The young man above would have past the least requirement in the old covenant, but lived to enter the new covenant where more is expected of him than the Ten Commandments to "follow" Jesus' exemplary life in the Eleventh Commandment.

“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. “But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven! Brother, yes! Following the example of Jesus includes a lot. We know that Jesus ate "broiled fish" in this next passage, which makes it an acceptable source of protein for those who need more protein in their diet.

Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread. And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost! “Why are you frightened?” he asked. “Why are your hearts filled with doubt? Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do.” As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet. Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he ate it as they watched. Then he said, “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ You are witnesses of all these things. “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.” (Luke 24:35-49 NLT)

Jesus said to tithe, yes, in the following passage but without neglecting the more important: justice, mercy and faith.

“Don’t let anyone call you ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one teacher, and all of you are equal as brothers and sisters. And don’t address anyone here on earth as ‘Father,’ for only God in heaven is your Father. And don’t let anyone call you ‘Teacher,’ for you have only one teacher, the Messiah. The greatest among you must be a servant. But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either. “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you cross land and sea to make one convert, and then you turn that person into twice the child of hell you yourselves are! “Blind guides! What sorrow awaits you! For you say that it means nothing to swear ‘by God’s Temple,’ but that it is binding to swear ‘by the gold in the Temple.’ Blind fools! Which is more important—the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred? And you say that to swear ‘by the altar’ is not binding, but to swear ‘by the gifts on the altar’ is binding. How blind! For which is more important—the gift on the altar or the altar that makes the gift sacred? When you swear ‘by the altar,’ you are swearing by it and by everything on it. And when you swear ‘by the Temple,’ you are swearing by it and by God, who lives in it. And when you swear ‘by heaven,’ you are swearing by the throne of God and by God, who sits on the throne. “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things. (Matthew 23:8-23 NLT)

Brother, they became part of the Eleventh Commandment when Jesus said to "follow" His example with the statement "Just as I have" in the following passage.

As soon as Judas left the room, Jesus said, “The time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory, and God will be glorified because of him. And since God receives glory because of the Son, he will give his own glory to the Son, and he will do so at once. Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer. Brother, were they separate commandments before? United in seeking his will!
Brother, they were laws given by God, but not of the group that made up the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments expose sin and once sin is exposed, you can't take it back. Removing the commandments does not remove the sin previously exposed by that commandment.

Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said, “You must not covet.” ... So the trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin ... Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin. (Romans 7:7, 14 & 25 NLT)

The solution to habitual sinning is the cycle of forgiveness from our High Priest Jesus to slowly separate sin from our character through practice. Like learning the piano, it takes a lot of practice and no one masters it in one sitting. The law does not allow practice and that is what we need and Jesus added, as our High Priest. Jesus' cycle of forgiveness allows our growth in obeying the Ten Commandments and more under the new faster cycle of forgiveness of Jesus as our High Priest.

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit. (Romans 8:1-4 NLT)

Brother, they were laws but not commandments? United in praising God!
Brother, happy Sabbath, which starts this Friday October 14, 2022 at 11:08 am EDT! The commandments of God are separated from other laws of God that are not part of the Ten Commandments of God in the following passage. One unique attribute of the Eleven Commandments after Jesus is that they come directly from God and not through Moses and later prophets. In the case of the Ten Commandments, they were written in stone by the finger of God and in the case of the Eleventh Commandment, we got it from Jesus, who is God, and the one who gave us the previous Ten Commandments. These Eleven Commandments are different than the other laws we received through Moses that were not directly written by God on two stone tablets. Why weren't they given in a single tablet because the Ten Commandments are summarized as the two greatest commandments? God is not the same as us humans in learning to love Him as one would love one of us humans.

Yes, I obey your commandments and laws because you know everything I do. (Psalm 119:168 NLT)

Brother, The Ten Commandments before Jesus and the Eleven Commandments after Jesus use a unique word in the Bible that is translated as "commandments" in the word for word translation of the King James Version. Most translations of the Bible do not keep the distinction of this unique word clear from other similar words used in the Bible.

Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments (entolas) of God and the faith of Jesus. (Revelation 14:12 NKJV)

This next translation puts the effort to keep the original words distinct throughout the whole Bible.

Here is the endurance of the saints, who are keeping the precepts (entolas) of God and the faith of Jesus." (Revelation 14:12 CLV)

Brother, happy Sabbath! That's good information

So... The laws we've been talking about, clean foods, tithing, does that word for commandment apply to them?

United in searching the scriptures!

Brother, No! That word did not apply to those other laws under the old covenant. Those other laws were not part of the minimum Ten Commandments before Jesus, but after Jesus, the Eleventh Commandment makes Jesus an example to "follow" and that brings all the laws that Jesus obeyed into the Eleven Commandments of the new covenant. Jesus opposed the human laws of Judaism, saying that they were human traditions of "blind guides". The problem of Judaism is not to do what God asks of them but to sabotage the Ten Commandments of God, as in the story of Hagar, with their own human laws when they are "blind guides" to use human laws effectively, unlike God who does know how to use them. God separated sin from our character through His Ten Commandments! What Judaism has not understood is that not just any law will remove sin from our character, but only the Ten Commandments given by someone who knows how to remove sin from our character. Therefore, human laws will not separate sin from our character because we are "blind guides" and only God's Ten Commandments can separate sin from our character, because He is not a "blind guide" to remove sin from our character. Sin He removes through His Ten Commandments and more under the new covenant's Eleven Commandments.

(Matthew 23:13-22 NLT)

Brother, yes! You can verify it yourself, as I have done online, by following these steps.
  1. google search for "John 14:15 interlinear"
  2. click the link on the word number 1785
  3. every verse where the word appears in the Bible is found in the right column
