Brother, thank you! I have corrected all my posts. God showed us in the desert for 40 years with Manna that being late for the Lord's "day" of rest does not enter into His "day" of rest.Brother, Happy 6th day! Then perhaps you want "11:25 am EDT" (note the D for daylight savings time)? United in pursuing the Sun of Righteousness!
Jesus presented it as the same Decalogue "re-imagined."Brothers and sisters, happy Sabbath that begins this Friday, September 23, 2022 at 11:34 am EDT! Here is the passage that gives us an Eleventh Commandment with the phrase "one thing" that you have not done, after answering the question with: you know "the commandments". Jesus' answer makes the "one thing" you haven't done an additional commandment. Consistent with us knowing the additional commandment in the new covenant of following Jesus' example.
Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: “Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.’” The man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” When Jesus heard his answer, he said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Luke 18:18-22 NLT)
The new Eleventh Commandment was not possible before Jesus, as we could not have "followed" the example of Jesus' life before His arrival, allowing us to "surpass" the glory of the previous Ten Commandments by Jesus' example, as superior to commandments given without an exemplary life to follow. Judaism sabotaged God's commandments by adding their own laws in a "human effort", as in the story of Hagar, to fulfill God's promise of separating sin from our character thanks to the cycle of forgiveness of our High Priest in the temple in heaven.
He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant (Eleven Commandments). This is a covenant not of written laws (Ten Commandments), but of the Spirit (reminding us to follow the exemplary life of Jesus). The old written covenant ends in death (sabotaged by human effort as in the story of Hagar); but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life (reminding us to follow the exemplary life of Jesus). The old way, with laws etched in stone (Ten Commandments), led to death (sabotaged by human effort as in the story of Hagar), though it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses’ face. For his face shone with the glory of God, even though the brightness was already fading away. Shouldn’t we expect far greater glory under the new way (Eleven Commandments), now that the Holy Spirit is giving life (reminding us to follow the exemplary life of Jesus)? If the old way (Ten Commandments), which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way (Eleven Commandments), which makes us right with God! In fact, that first glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the new way (Eleven Commandments). So if the old way (Ten Commandments), which has been replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new (Eleven Commandments), which remains forever! (2 Corinthians 3:6-11 NLT)

Clare, happy Sabbath! Jesus presented the new covenant as a continuation of how to express His "glory" more fully displayed in the life of Jesus than through the Ten Commandments. After Jesus, the Ten Commandments are no longer an outline written in stone subject to sabotage by Judaism adding their own laws, but fully expressed by the Holy Spirit reminding us of the exemplary life of Jesus to follow in obedience to the Ten Commandments and beyond, with the surpassing "glory" of following Jesus' example in the Eleventh Commandment.Jesus presented it as the same Decalogue "re-imagined."
However, Jesus' instruction to the man was not a commandment. It was a condition.Clare, happy Sabbath! Clare, since Jesus had given His answer with the "you know the commandments" statement, the "one thing" you haven't done can only be an additional commandment that is consistent with Him giving a new commandment to "follow" His example not possible before Jesus, who is leading this person to the new covenant. However, Jesus' instruction to the man was not a commandment. It was a condition.
Who made that rule?Clare, since Jesus had given His answer with the "you know the commandments" statement, the "one thing" you haven't done can only be an additional commandment
Clare, it's what is expected, unless one specifies a change, the "one thing you have not done" falls under the answer of "you know the commandments", consistent with Jesus having given a new commandment to "follow" His example.Who made that rule?
Giving "everything I have to the poor" is not an act of love in the following passage and all the commandments tell us how to love, disqualifying it as the "one thing you haven't done". The "one thing you haven't done" is the newly known additional Eleventh Commandment of the new covenant, to "follow" the example of Jesus, which was not possible before Jesus.Jesus is not commanding believers to sell all they have.
Clare, perhaps an analogy will help show how "there is still one thing you haven't done" relates to the answer given.Says who?
Thanks.Clare, perhaps an analogy will help show how "there is still one thing you haven't done" relates to the answer given.
Once a man asked a friend this question: “You know everything, what should I do to replace my broken window?” “Why do you say I know everything?” The friend asked him. “Only a builder knows everything.

Brother, happy Sabbath, which starts this Friday October 7, 2022 at 11:16 am EDT! We know Jesus gave a "new commandment" in the following passage, not possible before Jesus, to "follow" His example when He says "just as I have".Jorge, I would respectfully suggest that Jesus was not giving any new commandment. All he was doing was exposing the self-righteous heart of the religious leader who approached him, as no one else could do. He was exposing that man's love for money/wealth, which amounted to idolatry (Col 3:5). Also, Jesus didn't abolish any laws. He came to do what is impossible for us to do: He fulfilled the Law of Moses.
Brother, happy Sabbath, which starts this Friday October 7, 2022 at 11:16 am EDT! We know Jesus gave a "new commandment" in the following passage, not possible before Jesus, to "follow" His example when He says "just as I have".
As soon as Judas left the room, Jesus said, “The time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory, and God will be glorified because of him. And since God receives glory because of the Son, he will give his own glory to the Son, and he will do so at once. Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer. And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me, but you can’t come where I am going. So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” (John 13:31-35 NLT)
The same word above for commandment in the singular is used in the plural below, suggesting there are more than one as in the previous Ten Commandments.
“If you love me, obey my commandments. (John 14:15 NLT)
The question to answer historically is whether Jesus told us His "new commandment" replaces the previous Ten Commandments or is it a human tradition because humans would prefer less than more when reading the word of God. The plural above suggests it's added, but humans are bent on it replacing the previous commandments rather than adding to the previous commandments. Paul supports this "new commandment" being added to the Ten Commandments by telling us that the "glory" of the new covenant is "much more glories" than the "glory" of the Ten Commandments.
The clearest passage that tells us is added and does not replace the previous Ten Commandments is Jesus' answer: "you know the commandments". Then, after hearing he has already done these Ten Commandments since His youth, adding "there is still one thing you haven't done" to the question "what should I do to inherit eternal life?" when the one thing you have not done is consistent with the new Eleventh Commandment of following the example of Jesus in obeying all the Ten Commandments and more with the new covenant's "much more glories" Eleven Commandments than the Ten Commandments previously "etched in stone".
Brother, I believe that the young man knew how to grow in obedience to the commandments from his youth, unlike most Christians today who do not know how to remove past sins as this young man did daily by turning to the earthly temple "copy" that was a stand-in for the future High Priest Jesus in the true heavenly temple. The new birth for most Christians today is different from a child who, after falling for the first time, gives up and decides that he will not be able to walk for the rest of his life, when a real child will rise again and again until he no longer falls.Let's stick with the original passage in Luke 18, lest we go down too many rabbit trails, okay? Do you agree that the rich young ruler who approached Jesus was a self-righteous man? And do you believe that Jesus knew what was in all men's hearts?

Brother, "Jesus felt genuine love for him", when he said, "I've obeyed all these commandments since I was young". He fulfilled the requirements of the old covenant, but the new covenant demands more: the Eleventh Commandment. If this person had died before the new covenant, he would have fulfilled the commandments when there were only Ten Commandments before Jesus.after Jesus rattled off several of the commandments, the rich ruler unhesitatingly and unabashedly claimed "All these I have kept since I was a boy."
Giving "everything I have to the poor" is not an act of love in the following passage and all the commandments tell us how to love, disqualifying it as the "one thing you haven't done" given Jesus' answer "you know the commandments". The "one thing you haven't done" is the newly known additional Eleventh Commandment of the new covenant, to "follow" the example of Jesus, which was not possible before Jesus.the command was aimed at specific person under specific circumstances for a specific reason. It was not a a universal prescription per se, but rather a universal description that was designed to speak to all lovers of wealth and possessions and things of this world.

He fulfilled the requirements of the old covenant, but the new covenant demands more: the Eleventh Commandment. If this person had died before the new covenant, he would have fulfilled the commandments when there were only Ten Commandments before Jesus.
As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’” “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.” Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Mark 10:17-21 NLT)

If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:1-3 NLT)
Giving "everything I have to the poor" above is not an act of love for it to qualify as the additional new Eleventh Commandment in the passage below, where the known new Eleventh Commandment is to "follow" the example of Jesus.

Brother, Jesus gave a "new commandment" in the following passage, not possible before Jesus, to "follow" His example when He says "just as I have".There is no "eleventh" commandment.
Finally we agree on something. There is no "eleventh" commandment. Besides, God often enjoined his people in the OT to give to the poor, help the oppressed, etc. Obviously, you cannot see that this man was a self-righteous idolater who worshiped money. Jesus saw this in his heart immediately and "hit" this young ruler where he lived, where his treasure was -- in his purse.
