You can believe what you want.squint said:In case you missed it most Protestants (which I loosely align myself with as well) adhere to many common denominators with the 'Mary venerators.' Just seeing differently on that particular item is no cause to slur the documents in question which theoretically were prior to Mary in any case. There's baby. There's bathwater.
I'm a Protestant in the fine tradition of the baptists and the Pentecostals. I have a mixed background. Cherry picking scripture is what this thread is about, not what I do. I'm surprised that people think they have something new to bring to the table regarding books that aren't canon. Do you really think the question hadn't been posed before? Reminds me of cult leaders and their "new revelations ". The fact that this is affecting peoples walk more than the Gospels concerning Jesus should be a red light for everyone...LiberalAnglicanCatholic said:No, some are protestants in the fact they disagree with all of Rome's polices. then there are "protestants" that rely less on fact and biblical and historical analysis then jumps of logic and cherry picking of Scripture. It's kind of clear which camp you fall into.
I'll have a proper read of it some time since you asked but I won't be changing my mind on it just yet.squint said:If you haven't read the book of Wisdom I would highly recommend it. It's quite Holy Spirit inspired. Judith is a great historical piece as well. Just excellent leadership by a woman moved by her faith in God. An amazing story of outfoxing a superior adversary. You should, you know, open your mind just a peep. It won't hurt.

If you're freed from extra biblical nonsense then why are you a Baptist? That whole credo baptism as a witness of your faith before the congregation (the public testimony thing) is extra biblical. That we do actually have a movement that had freed us from extra-Biblical nonsense. That we are serious about it, not some foolish rebels.

My point is that I wouldn't be quick to take lessons in theological or canonical accuracy from anyone who venerates Mary,
You need to understand scripture and not approach it as though it can be taken at immediate face value.
My point was that if Tobit (or other books) are dismissed because of things that we think are "weird", then other people can point to other passages that they think are weird, and then we come up dismissing the whole thing.
Interesting point. What would you say is the difference between Tobit and Enoch, if any?

Mama Kidogo said:That's fair. So why not read for yourself and make up your own mind. Take your lesson from your conscience after reading. I assure you Mary is not in those books floating around to grab you like a bulldog. ven·er·ate verb regard with great respect; revere. Shame on me for venerating the Mother of my Lord. I should probably be shot.

Erose said:Interesting considering Scripture says that it is necessary for salvation. It looks like Baptist are into extra-Biblical beliefs.
Tobit is Scripture where Enoch isn't. Also Tobit is apocalyptic literature. It is a story of having trust in God, God's power to liberate us from evil, and the work of angels in our lives. Also it should be pointed out that it is from Tobit that Jesus quoted the Golden Rule.
