You are severely overestimating how much people in the US care whether or not you buy Wrigley's gum.
And yet there is so much response in this thread from people trying to deride people for choosing to not buy USA made.

Well I see it as responding to the tariffs USA is imposing on countries, not to Trump's existence or to Trump being the president of USA. But specifically in response to these ridiculous tariffs that everyone except Russia is getting slopped onto them.
The reason Russia isn't on the tariff list is because

A) the sanctions that already exist mean we don't do any measurable amount of trade with them anyway (same reason Cuba isn't on the tariff list, does the US show any special favoritism to Cuba?? Last I heard, we're barbarians for refusing to engage in commerce with them)

B) The measure included imposing 500-percent tariffs on imported goods from countries that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium and other products.

I actually hope you go all the way. Go through your home and rid yourself of anything made in the USA. C'mon! Show us you're all in! Have a bonfire and post the pictures here!

That's not true. From ChatGPT:

Yes, U.S. Navy ships can visit New Zealand's waters, but such visits are contingent upon compliance with New Zealand's nuclear-free legislation.

Nuclear-Free Policy and U.S. Navy Access

New Zealand enacted a nuclear-free policy in 1984, prohibiting the entry of ships that are either nuclear-armed or nuclear-powered into its ports. This policy led to a suspension of the ANZUS defense treaty between the United States and New Zealand, as the U.S. Navy does not officially confirm or deny whether its ships carry nuclear weapons or are nuclear-powered. Consequently, U.S. Navy vessels were effectively barred from New Zealand ports for several decades .The Beehive+1The Australian+1The Washington Times+3Wikipedia+3Wikipedia+3

Recent Developments

In 2016, the relationship between the two nations began to thaw. New Zealand invited the USS Sampson, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, to participate in the Royal New Zealand Navy’s 75th anniversary International Naval Review.Prime Minister John Key granted approval for the visit after confirming that the USS Sampson was neither nuclear-armed nor nuclear-powered, aligning with New Zealand's legal requirements .TimeAP News+2The Beehive+2Time+2
Further diplomatic engagement occurred in 2021 when U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta visited New Zealand, marking the first visit by a Pentagon chief in nearly three decades. During this visit, the U.S. lifted its ban on New Zealand naval ship visits, signaling a renewed commitment to stronger defense ties, while New Zealand reaffirmed its anti-nuclear stance .BBC News

Current Status

As of now, the policy remains that U.S. Navy ships may visit New Zealand ports, provided they do not carry nuclear weapons or are nuclear-powered. Any prospective visit would require prior approval from the New Zealand government, ensuring compliance with the nation's nuclear-free laws.Time
In summary, while U.S. Navy ships are permitted in New Zealand's waters, adherence to New Zealand's nuclear-free legislation is a prerequisite for such visits.
The USA has so far refused to provide schematics and other proof that a "visiting" ship is not nuclear. So effectively the US navy cannot come here. Except for that one time.

And yet USA slapped tariffs on an Island with no people, just penguins, but not Russia.

It must really annoy some USA folk how easy it is for people to buy alternatives to USA made products.

It's easy people, there really is no excuse not to do it. Plus it will make you Fonzy level cool. Oh hang on Fonzy is a USA dude, um many, well, maybe just generically cool.. How cool is that?

I mean, you started the thread, you can't accept critiques about the concept has "haha, look how triggered the Americans are".

By introducing the topic in the discussion and debate forum, you asked for it to be debated.

Ultimately, I don't care what you buy.

People shouldn't be consuming orange soda or lay's potato chips in the first place.

But if you're going to depict "I'll buy this other nearly identical product as the one I actually wanted to buy, and then portray it as an act of righteous defiance/heroism", then expect criticism.

People using this app are about as "edgy and cool" as someone who picks Burger King over McDonald's for political reasons. They still get to stuff their face with a cheeseburger and fries (no actual sacrifice on their part), while pretending they're "doing something".

OK, sorry, I mis-remembered.
It wasn't removal of sanctions themselves it was the removal of enforcing sanctions and siezing of assets on Russian oligarchs

Trump DOJ disbands team targeting Russian oligarchs in shift to combating drugs and gangs

"This policy requires a fundamental change in mindset and approach," Bondi wrote in the directive, adding that resources now devoted to enforcing sanctions and seizing the assets of oligarchs will be redirected to countering cartels.

I'm not trying to trigger anyone.
I just saw an article on an app highlighting products that benefit USA so people could avoid buying those and I thought this was great and wanted to talk about it, perhaps even promote the app or apps just like it.
By introducing the topic in the discussion and debate forum, you asked for it to be debated.
Discussion, not necessarily debated.

Great
I don't care what you buy or don't buy either. None of my business.

Not for me to say. People can buy whatever they want.
But if you're going to depict "I'll buy this other nearly identical product as the one I actually wanted to buy, and then portray it as an act of righteous defiance/heroism", then expect criticism.
I never portrayed anything as an act of righteous defiance/heroism, that is just your inhibitions injected into it.

Has anyone claimed that using the app will make you edgy or cool? This is really weird.
They still get to stuff their face with a cheeseburger and fries (no actual sacrifice on their part), while pretending they're "doing something".
Personally I want to avoid my own money going to USA.

It's certainly a misnomer, a belief spread from guitarist to guitarist without any substance.

My favorite part was the "air guitar".

The original solid body electric had a body literally made from a 4x4. Here's a visit to the museum:

My favorite comment:

Les Paul “I don’t wanna hear the body o wanna hear the string”
Everyone else “TOOOONNNNEEEE WOOOOOODDDD!”

Lol, he chopped an acoustic in half and stuck the halves onto the sides of his plank of wood because otherwise the audience couldn't tell he was playing a guitar, they got all confused and so it was there purely for aesthetics not for tone.

Oh no! However will I know if it's OK to buy products unless someone tells me!
How do you join a boycott? How do you even know that there is a boycott? As I keep saying, you are missing the point completely.
I am at a loss as to how you think there is any comparison between slogans on T-shirts and an organized boycott.
The difference between wearing a slogan on your t shirt and joining a boycott? Well, one is identifying with a position and making it publically known. And the other is...umm...identifying with a position and making it publically known.

Ah yes...it's called "DeTrumpify" and shows an unflattering image of him when scanning a bar code, but it has nothing to do with people having a personal grudge against Trump.

C'mon, you know this is ridiculous right? lol.
Trump continually makes stupid comments and does remarkably dumb things. And I know it's hard to separate the man himself from what he says or does. But you should try harder. The fact that he is intensely dislikeable as a person for so many reasons was a good reason not to have him on the ballot last year. His policies shouldn't even have been a talking point. His character should have disqualified him from standing. It certainly would have down here. We demand better from our politicians. But now that he's been elected, his character is of secondary importance. Now it's his policies that are front and centre.

And although you're having some difficulty coming to terms with this, it's his policies that are of concern to your average Canadian. If he had said that to cement the friendship between the US and Canada he was going to chip in and build a few hospitals across Canada then the reaction thzt you would have got would have been along the lines of 'Well, the guy is a moron and has the morals of an alley cat, but hey, thanks a lot's
If someone created an app called "NObama", and every time they scanned a product, it showed an unflattering pic of him with information about which companies donated to the Obama campaign with the intent of getting people to avoid purchasing them, everyone would rightfully identify it as a personal grudge.
And in the same way, people might have thought that Obama was a solid type of guy, someone you'd like to hang out with and have a beer, but if he was the one to hit Canada with ridiculous tariffs, then it would have been a caricture of Obama on that app. The reaction would have been 'Hey, he seems like a great guy. But we ain't putting up with that'.

There you go then Elon's other job is safe even though the Tesla company are having some significant financial difficulties due to the boycott.
The board's comment reminds me of the type of kiss-of-death language often used by the owners of a football club.

'I know we're going through a difficult time, but we need everyone to know that Pete has the 100% backing of the board and he has our complete support.'

Translation: 'We're not putting up with this a moment longer than we have to, we're actively looking for a replacement and an announcement will be made shortly.'

Indeed. You are participating in something meaningless. "Doing something".
Please don't twist what I am saying. I don't appreciate it. Doing something alone can be meaningless. As a much larger group, your contribution helps it become that 'much larger group'. And you know that's what I meant.
Yes, feeling a part of something is a powerful force for many people.
It certainly is.
The vast majority of people are followers.
By definition. Including both of us.
Those people need someone else to tell them what to do, how to think, what to buy, etc. Whether or not that's "meaningful" is up for debate.
You keep trying to picture this as either meaningless, people trying to 'be cool' or now as unthinking sheep. I think you've reached the point where further discussion will probably be a waste of both our time.

Yes, by making zero sacrifices and not personally inconveniencing yourself by any measurable degree.
One example will suffice. The trip to the US we'd planned for sometime later this year or next has now been cancelled. We love the country, so not going is quite a sacrifice.

You are severely overestimating how much people in the US care whether or not you buy Wrigley's gum.
Countries aren't ruminating on whether to decrease imports of chewing gum. Governments are realising that for the foreseeable future, the global market is going to have to readjust to exclude the US. This is one of countless articles telling you the same thing: Global Realignment Could Boost Aussie Markets

'There’s a noticeable move away from the US markets, and they both observe an increased flow of investment into gold, signalling a more cautious approach from investors. On a geopolitical level, they note that countries are reevaluating their alliances and trade relationships, which could ultimately provide a boost to Australia’s economic prospects. As the world grapples with evolving political and economic dynamics, Australia appears to be positioning itself as a key player in the changing global market.'

It's somewhat trite to accuse someone of underestimating what US care about gum when you are ignoring the big picture. It's like saying that you don't really care if people think the soup is too cold after the ship has hit the iceberg.

It appears that the US brand boycott is gathering pace.

Whilst many people feel completely helpless watching the chaos unfold, others are taking the ‘Canadian approach’ and protesting with their wallets by completely boycotting US brands. This is aimed to hit Trump’s billionaire backers where it hurts – in their pockets. Elon Musk has seen his Tesla shares fall off a cliff following a buying boycott within the US, Canada and Europe, and the boycotts aim to put the pressure on elsewhere too.

Zoe Gardner, an organiser of the Stop Trump Coalition in the UK, is seeing rapidly increasing interest in the issue. “A lot of what we are seeing is coming about organically, people putting stuff on TikTok. People are so furious, and this is about taking back power. Already across Europe we are seeing sales of Tesla falling of a cliff because Musk encapsulates so much of the problem with the Trump administration, both its culture of horrible racism and the economic side.”

In a globalised world, consumers can choose to align their purchasing decisions with their values. Whether for political, ethical, environmental, or economic reasons.

The growing consumer boycotts demonstrate that power can still be in the hands of the people. More UK shoppers could consider boycotting American brands in favour of British or European alternatives (or they could simply go without that weekly Costa or McDonald’s).

For those thinking about reducing their reliance on US companies, here are 50 well-known American brands to be aware of:

US Brands Boycott – top 50 US Brands

...
...
As politicians around the world scramble to respond to US “liberation day” tariffs, consumers have also begun flexing their muscles. “Boycott USA” messages and searches have been trending on social media and search engines, with users sharing advice on brands and products to avoid.

This targeting of Trump and Musk’s brands are part of wider boycotts of US goods as consumers look for ways to express their anger at the US administration.

Denmark’s biggest retailer, Salling Group, has given the price label of all European products a black star, making it easy for customers to avoid US goods.

Canadian shoppers are turning US products upside down in retail outlets so it’s easier for fellow shoppers to spot and avoid them. Canadian consumers can also download the Maple Scan app that checks barcodes to see if their grocery purchases are actually Canadian or have parent companies from the USA

The European countries where thousands are boycotting US goods

Consumers who are furious over President Donald Trump’s policies are boycotting U.S. goods - from Coca-Cola to Colgate toothpaste
Those who have joined a growing movement across Europe and Canada to boycott U.S. products say it’s the only way they know how to protest President Donald Trump's policies.

The terms “Boycott USA,” and “Boycott America” showed a spike in searches as Trump announced new tariffs, according to Google Trends, with the top regions including Denmark, Canada and France.

Retired Danish police officer Ivan Hansen says he now carefully checks each product at the supermarket to avoid buying anything made in the United States - which means no more Coca-Cola, California Zinfandel wine or almonds.

A growing boycott movement across Europe

Thousands across Europe and Canada are joining Facebook groups where they exchange ideas about how to avoid U.S. products and find alternatives.

Feelings are especially strong across the Nordic region — and very possibly strongest in Denmark given Trump's threats to seize Greenland.

As President Donald Trump targets Mexico and Canada in a growing trade war, the movement to boycott American products is spreading far beyond North America, The Guardian reports.

Canadian travel to the United States is down almost 25 percent since February 2024. Europeans are flagging American goods while identifying their own goods with black stars, giving consumers the option to buy local. In Germany, musicians are cancelling summer tours in the U.S.

Canada has pulled American liquor products from its shelves. Tesla sales in Europe have plummeted, with the company losing 15 percent of its value on Monday alone.

In Sweden, Facebook groups are promoting local products and boycotting American businesses, including Facebook itself. In Norway, an oil bunkering company, Haltbakk, said it will no longer supply U.S. Navy ships with fuel, citing Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s contentious visit to the White House.
