  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Let's face it, folks! RottenTomatoes.com gave this movie a 16%. To be frank, this movie stinks on ice!

It's 22%, and one of the reviews has been copied 15 times over and one movie still has it worse this week. "See No Evil" by WWE films is at 0%.

Take out all the copies of the LVRJ review, and it's about low-40s.

I saw the movie because of all the people trashing it on CF, I wouldn't have seen it because I never paid attention to the book. But I figure, when this many people are lashing out at a movie, it's worth it to see what all the controversy is over. I thought it was a pretty good movie. Thank you CFers, if there ever is a movie you want to lash out at, I'll be sure to see it, just to see why it's a bad movie.

A movie based on this popular of a book, with the star talent behind it and a very successful marketing campaign is bound to do well.

If anyone would like to read where the premise for the religious aspect of the story came from I'd recommend starting with Pierre Plantard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Plantard

Yup, the book is pure fiction. Pierre Plantard isn't a reliable historian. Got it.

And the movie is only so-so. Okay.

The book was no more than a good mystery/thriller with sensational fictional theories and great settings. It was still a fun read.

But the movie has several things running for it:
a) nail-biting story, even if you know what's going to happen and it isn't much different than the average good thriller
b) Beautiful, awe-inspiring scenery and architecture
c) Tom Hanks, etc.
d) Controversial, though fictional, topics
e) Paul Bettany looking like a pale 80's punk star.

I'm probably going to see the film, despite its shortcomings, for the reasons I've listed above.

I actually thought this was one of the bad things about the movie, Tom Cruise was horrible miscast IMO, and Cruise does best with an amazing director (Spielberg, et all) and doesn't fare as well under the so-so directing of Ron Howard.

There is none, in fact all the evidence points to the accuracy of the NT.

How so? I just recently read that historical religious research into the origins of the 4 gospels in the NT point to them having been written and/or influenced by one man alone - Paul! So, it's his view which is reflected in large parts of the NT!

It also seems to be a historical fact that the council of Nicea selected only a few screipts for inclusion into the NT!

How could anyone possibly claim that what we see in the NT today is any more accurate than what was written in other scrolls and documents which have been rejected, for a variety of political and power play reasons?

Your assumption stands on very weak legs!;)

Who cares what RottenTomatoes says. Who pays attention to reviews anyway? Don't people know how make up their own mind? Form your own opinion. Quit letting it be formed for you.

Indeed!

Go watch the movie or read the book and if you then still condem the contents, fine! Then people will be more inclined to respect your opinions!

Tom Cruise? I think you're thinking about M:I:3, not The Da Vinci Code :p

I can understand the confusion: one has Tom Cruise speeding around in an exploding car (according to the ads), the other has Tom Hanks, Ian McKellan, Audrey Tautou and other great actors trying to solve a luke warm yet thrilling fictional mystery in beautiful churches, art galleries, and cities in Europe.

(and yes, I've read the book:D )

"Moviegoers shunned harsh reviews and spent $77 million on "The Da Vinci Code" this weekend, giving Sony Pictures' theological thriller the best opening so far this year at U.S. and Canadian theaters.

The film's worldwide box-office gross was even more staggering: At $224 million, it ranked second in history to last year's "Star Wars: Episode III," which hauled in $253 million."

Well at least all those people who will be going to Hell because they saw this movie will have plenty of company. I personally have not seen it, nor have I read the book and I don't intend to. But that shouldn't stop me from being judgemental about it. Besides its too dangerous for Christians to see this movie. Even though it is admittedly pure fiction it could plant a seed of doubt in Christians' minds that will ultimately cause them to renounce their faith, worship Satan, and God-forbid: vote Demoncrat.

Even though being married and having children would in no way detract from Jesus's divinity or his message saying he was is a lie, probably constructed by the Communists, or the ACLU, or Hillary Clinton.

Meh. A lot of movies end up with huge opening weekends, then tank within two weeks as word of mouth gets around that the movie really, really sucks. Talk to me in two weeks about how great it's doing. Until then, I'm still going to ignore it. I'm taking the World's Cutest Boy (TM) and a special lady to see Over the Hedge today. At least that's entertaining.

I suppose the answer to that lies in what kind of historical evidence can be presented that would bolster the theory that Jesus and Mary were married and had children.

If you discount the Bible as historically accurate, the evidence that Jesus raised from the dead, ect is just not there. I know this is a debate for GA though, and is debated there daily. I am not surprised at the numbers of people going to see the DaVinci code, but I have no desire to watch it. The hype scares me away from movies for the most part, unless its a Sci-Fi feature.

Perhaps Cruise would have been a better choice.

I will again ask, which scroll or documents exist which show that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and had a child together?

Has anyone noticed how all the attention in the Christian world has now shifted from homosexuality to the Da Vinci code?

Care to take a guess about what the next big controversial subject will be?

The Omen?

Release date 6/6/06. Ohh, how clever. The orginals are still good, why do they have to redo every movie ever made?

Yes. Duh. It is so much easier when the story is already written for you.
