In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi! Hey, I came across the baby bootie pattern I used! Let me know if you still want it.

Prayers for you dad. I know how scary that can be. My sweet mother had a mild heart attack recently so I understand how much it concerns us when we're faced with the thought of losing a parent.

Thank you BarbaraJean, I would love the pattern if you have the time. I am spending alot of time in ICU with Dad, and I would love to make some booties while I am waiting. Only two people can go in at a time, so Mum, my sister and my BIL take turns in going in. I taught my beautiful sister how to crochet last year, and I want to teach her some new things.

We nearly lost Dad, they tried to intubate him for 2 hours on Thursday, the nurse told me that one Dr looked like he was going to faint and the other Dr sweated a litre of fluid. Then Dad slipped into a coma and did not come out for about 70 hours - not that long, but felt like a life time to me. He started to wake up when my sister whistled, and the next day when I came into see him, he mouthed "I love you" it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

Some more good news, I had my surgery on Friday, and the surgeon told me again that he thought that the tumor was cancer. Today I found out that it was not - it was completely clear! God is so good! When the Dr thought it was cancer, I looked up the support group recommended by the Dr's nurse. The first thing it told you to do in preparing for surgery was to make sure your will is up to date - cheerful aye. The type of tumor they thought it was does not respond to chemo or radiation therapy. Because my family were going through so much, I did not tell them what my Dr thought. They knew I was having surgery, but they thought that it was benign. My best friend was so wonderful and supporting, she kept on cheering me up and making jokes. She said that I could leave her my crochet books and my wool, lol. I told her that she would have to split it with my sister. I have been teaching her to crochet as well. She is a very good knitter, and has some wonderful patterns (all in Russian, I am sure I have told you about her before).

Well that was way of topic, but I am so happy with our answered prayers that I cannot help but share my joy with everyone!

How is your mother doing now? I hope she is fine, I will add her to my prayer list anyway.

My dear, you have been through so much! What a wonderful testimony you have! God bless you and give you and your family strength.

Thanks for asking about my mom. She is back in the hospital. They did another heart cath today. It shows that the stint they put in is fine but they will have to do more tests to see what is causing her irregular heartbeat.

I will pray for your mother, I hope that the results will be good. God is so good! It may sound strange, but I am praising God that I had the cancer scare. My Mum reminded me on the weekend that we should praise God ever when we think that everything is going bad. I have found new sources of strength that I never would thought I had. I had a naso gastric tube put in, very painful and extremely uncomfortable, but I now know how Dad's tube feels, and how to take care of it so it does not hurt. I praise God that Dad had this accident, that he will be forced to rest, we were worried that he may have a heart attack or stroke because he works so hard. I praise God that I have Crohn's, if I did not have it, they would never have found the tumor, even though they turned out to benign. I praise God that I wad hit on the head by a oxygen saturation monitor and developed traumatic epilepsy, other wise I would still be working and would not be able to take a long leave of absence.

Thank you for the pattern, I will try it tonight. You are so very kind

Well... it's finished! Here is a picture of the completed afghan made with the 12 inch squares made by several different ladies in my church. I put them all together and bordered it. It will be auctioned this evening and the proceeds will be donated to the fund for our new church building.

 at everyone!

I am just 24 hours into crocheting (not sleeping at the mo'). I've taught myself how to do the basic stitches - slip stitch, double trebles, trebles, half trebles and the double crochet - but I'm stuck on how to increase or decrease my stitches.

YouTube and Nexstitch.com have helped me with the basic stuff. But, does anyone know of any other free crochet video websites which may show me how to increase or decrease?

Thanks and blessings to you!

Alas, after 3 teach yourself textbooks (given to me by my mom and older sister), I've realised that my learning style is 'show-and-do'. I just can't seem to picture the diagrams nor instructions when it comes to me doing it. I found that by watching the videos it was a bit like sitting next to my mom (as a kid) when she showed me how to make a chain. :)

But last night I had a go at making a circle in double crochet. It didn't come out flat but at least HRH's Barbie now has a beret. ^_^

Going to attempt that again tonight though.

Don't worry about it not being flat. As you become more experienced your stitches will become more uniform so just keep at it. Also some patterns simply aren't going to lie flat until you block them. Dampen the project, lay it out flat on a cushion or your ironing board, secure it with stick pins and allow it to dry that way. If I didn't explain that well Google "crochet blocking". There are a lot of sites that explain it.

DIY Network had a segement on one of it's shows yesterday on crocheting. I think it was "Uncommon Threads". Perhaps if you check their website you might find a video you can watch.

Thanks sis and I'll also go and check out the website too.

I was wondering if you can help me with a pattern translation. Was I correct in interpreting the following pattern instructions as:

Instructions = Create a 22 chain then,

1st Row - 1tr. into 3rd ch. from hook, 1 tr. into next ch., * 3 ch., miss 3 ch., 1 tr. into each of next 3 ch., repeat from * twice, 3 ch., turn

After creating a 22 chain, I made a treble stitch in the third chain from the hook, then I made another treble stitch into the next chain; I took the asterisk (*) as the point that I go back and repeat instructions but I first created 3 chains, missed the 3 next chains, inserted a treble stitch in the 3 consecutive chains (after counting 3 missed chains) ; repeated this process twice, reached the end of the chain, created 3 more chains and turned.

I'd interpreted this 1st row as above, but in reality completed the instructions before reaching the end of my chain and had to complete the row as per the image in the magazine.

Was this how you guys interpreted the abbrieviations?

This is another one of the basic patterns that I'm going to practice again tonight along with the circles.

Thanks again, in advance!

Yes, that's how I would have completed that row. I grabbed my needle and ran through the pattern and you should have ended exactly at the end of your 22 chains.

A couple things that caught my attention:
1- Are you actually making something or is this just a practice? It concerns me that if you're making something that the pattern didn't have skip enough chains in the beginning. Did you notice how your first side is rounded?

2- Did the pattern tell you how many trebles and spaces you should have at the end of your row? I've found that most good patterns will tell you this. It's a good way to verify that you've completed the row correctly. If you have too many or too few stitches on row 1 then row 2 isn't going to work out evenly.

For the row you completed you should have 12 trebles (that includes the the first 2 skipped chains as your first treble) and 3 ch-3 spaces.

I hope that makes sense. ;)

Ahhhhh, cool! Thank you!

This is my 2nd day trying things out so I'm only at the stage where I am practicing various stitches - I love it! I'd bought this mini magazine from one of our craft stores but the publication dates back to the 70's ^_^ . As such the instructions are vague and don't provide an indication of what you end up with. My sister's book was bought in the late 70's and my mother's book goes back further (the pages are all brown).

I'd found that I was about 3 foundation chains short after I'd read the 1st row (in hindsight I may have misinterpreted where I first inserted my hook initially). The little square came out ok but it was with a little improvisation.

Tonight I'm going to practice this again though and see how it turns out.

Thanks again
