• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Creationism is....

I honestly don't know your posting style.

Sometimes I feel like butting in, so I'll read what one person said to another, just to cut in and say something ... shall we say ... thought-provoking.
There may be others who see your posts where you cut into an a discussion somewhat differently. Perhaps the term hijacking might come into play at times? At any rate they certainly can be seen as provoking. It is what is is being provoked that is the question.

Try out the philosophy subforums sometime, AV.
No, thanks.

I'm here to give scientists a real run for their money.

If they've got the guts to come here and tell us what they think of us and ours, then we should have the guts to stand up to them.

I hope I aggravate them to the pits of Hell and back; and to the summits of the very throne of Heaven as well.

-_- the theological views of others then. So touchy, I wasn't even calling your specific beliefs a religion there.
College wouldn't know real theology if Jesus were to rule and reign here for a thousand years.

I would suggest that you do this before making blanket statements like you did above in reference to PsychoSarah and her education.
Actually I thought it was a compliment.

She sounds college-educated to me.

I've been to college myself.

Rather, it is the philosophical underpinnings and the rhetorical modes of expression of the different sides which draw my attention.
I can't get into Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and Thomas Malthus' Malthusian Equilibrium and Darwin's Preservation of Favoured Races and all that other stuff.

I just can't.

I tried reading Henry David Thoreau once, but gave up.

Let's be frank, Sarah.

Religion can go back to Hell where it came from, but college won't let it.

See, as I mentioned before, this kind of statement about "religion" versus whatever you choose to describe how you practice Christianity comes across as rhetorical grandstanding.

Also, you employ a false dichotomy to try to redefine and stigmatize the term "religion/religious" so that it is in opposition to some kind of purist, pietistic, spritualized form of Christianity that you think you hold.

In the end, "religion/religious" has never been thought of in this manner by the historical Church. Rather, it is a newfangled tactic (usually coupled with accusations of "Phariseeism") that is used by radical Protestants and non-denominationalists to attempt to distinguish themselves from Catholic, Orthodox, and traditional apostolic churches.

Even though we disagree on some key ideas, AV, I think you hold up your side of our debates in a manner I can respect. Not that that means you're actually right, you understand.

I try.

Yesterday though I was patting myself on the back for having lain "snake oil salesmen" at the feet of scientists until, to my disappointment, I found out that snake oil salesmen know their product is fake; so that endeavor failed.

Well boo-hoo for some "historical Church."

I'm an Independent Baptist, chief.

I'll bet you think I'm a Protestant, don't you?

I have no idea what this means.
It means: how does it feel having to take what you guys dish out?

You wanna say we came from apes ... fine.

You wanna say Jesus did this or didn't do that ... fine.

Two can play that game.

Perhaps I have misread what you stated, but the comments below would seem to indicate that you have a rather negative perception of the impact of a college education on a person's spiritual and theological views.

Antibiblical remarks, ridicule from behind question marks, refusal to understand on principle; all done with good English and punctuation.

I'd say you've been to college.

College wouldn't know real theology if Jesus were to rule and reign here for a thousand years.

"Antibiblical remarks," "question marks," "refusal to understand principle," and then finishing the statement with "I'd say you've been to college" does not cast the impact of a college education in a positive light.

Okay, but college education is not merely confined to a de-contextualized memorization of various foundational theories. At least, this is not how I was taught to approach it, nor is it how I approach it in my own work.

Rather, theory should be used as a framework for the analysis of how and why scholars have thought about and discussed any given issue. It can also be used to understand how distilled versions of different theories "trickle down" into every-day discourse.

I tried reading Henry David Thoreau once, but gave up.

Yeah, Thoreau can get pretty heavy if you do not read him in chunks. I like his respect for nature and refusal to accept the "disenchantment of the world" that post-Enlightenment thinking tried to sell to him and other intellectuals.

Well boo-hoo for some "historical Church."

Does this come across as arrogant to you?

I'm an Independent Baptist, chief.

Again, the patronizing language. The independent Baptists, as well as other Baptist groups, come from a clear line of descent from the Radical Reformation started by Zwingli and the Anabaptists.

I'll bet you think I'm a Protestant, don't you?

Indeed. I do not subscribe to the Trail of Blood version of church history. Do you?
