My (God given) mind and senses tell me it is old. I know it is old because those who study its age also find it to be old, using their minds and senses. I trust my mind and senses.

In order for me to believe it is young, I would have to assume my senses are faulty. If I came to this conclusion, I would have no way to accurately ascertain truth. Everything I observed would therefore take on the character of illusion. If the age of the universe is an illusion, then the age of everything I observe may also be an illusion, including the Bible.

Hey coolstylinstud, I'm about your age and a Christian too. Sorry that these people have been harsh on you. They just get frustrated when creationists (those who believe in literal Genesis) come in here with arguments that have already been shown false many times. I'd like to give you a tiny internet course about the Creation/Evolution Forum:

-Evolution is a scientific theory (like the theory of gravity or theory of atoms) that explains why there is such a variety of living things on earth. Evolution takes place over very long periods of time (usually millions of years) and very gradually. That means that we shouldn't expect to have dogs giving birth to chipmunks or elephants giving birth to mice. Evolution predicts that dogs will give birth to dogs, but that the offspring will be slightly different than the parents.

-Over a long period of time (again, usually millions of years), these little changes add up to produce major changes.

-Darwin never admitted evolution was wrong on his deathbed--even creationist organizations admit that. And even if he did, that still wouldn't make it wrong.

-Millions of Christians around the world accept evolution as a way that God created. Many true, Bible-believing Christians think that Genesis 1 is a parable to explain why we need redemption. It may not have actually happened, but it was God's way of explaining to the ancient Israelites that God made everything, humans are sinful, and we need a Savior. It doesn't have to be literally true to make it meaningful.

-In addition, many evolutionary scientists are Bible-believing Christians (including a geneticist on this message forum). These people see evolution as a beautiful process that God set in motion. Evolution is not in any way anti-God.

-A lot of people will probably point you to the TalkOrigins website, a very good site (although it can get a little technical sometimes). Just honestly ask questions on this board and we will be happy to answer them as long as you're not yelling at us or scolding us. If you honestly want to know about evolution, may God bless you as you use the mind He gave you.

Another thing-a lot of people use these abbreviations that really confused me at first:

ToE - Theory of Evolution
YEC - Young Earth Creationism
OEC - Old Earth Creationism
TE - Theistic Evolution (hey, that's me!)
2LoT - Second Law of Thermodynamics (which, by the way, doesn't contradict evolution.)
PRATT or PRATTs - Points Refuted A Thousand Times.

I would like to add to that my own evolutionary primer. It addresses the most serious misconceptions about evolutionary theory.

By the way, atomic theory is "just" a theory too. Its never been proven, not even in Hiroshima. But that doesn't mean that nuclear submarines are a atomist hoax.

This thread gives me the full range of emotions...

I sighed, then I cried, then I got angry, then I laughed. Then I stabbed myself with a fork to distract from the pain. Then I laughed again.

Then I felt sorry for the kid cuz some of yall have been harsh. Still, it's not as though he himself came in here with the most gracious of attitudes.

I gotta differ with you there. We evolved from Propliopithecids, an ancient branch of Old World monkeys, [infraorder Catarrhini]. So we did evolve from monkeys. We had to have, because we're still monkeys now!

Wow, that was quite the thread, and I agree with funyun. The amazing thing is I thought this to be a post and run, but I'm glad it wasn't. I actually have a friend (who is 16, mind you... gah) who feels almost the same as coolstylin.. I can't finish that name. Anyway, it's horrible to debate.. I think CSD put it best when he said he didn't want any scientific evidence, only evidence from the bible...

I'm curious to see if he's read many of the OT laws and commandments, and many of those he follows. Also, I couldn't resist the obvious one here:
