Could we already be dead?

The thing is though, nobody truly, completely knows for sure. Imagine for a moment that this life is completely all you have and ever will have.

Life is eternal. Perishing things pass for a reason. In God, all things are new. The perishing doesn't ever exist in the eternal.

In contrast to you, I am terrified. Plus, technically, if you want to go all Hindu or Buddhist about it, you could consider that we did exist before we were born in this body, we just don't remember it.

But anyways, not existing is beyond comprehension, eternally unknown. The closest I can think of to experiencing it would be sleep, but still most of our brain is conscious then, to various extents. Plus, what of the people you loved, and those in the future? To exist knowing they have ceased or shall do so is agony.

I don't know what the Hindis are buddhists think about it...but I see no more reason to think I existed before I was born than reason there is to think a god exists. If I'm just going to believe in whatever without any evidence...why not believe in ghosts goblins and psychic powers? That would at least be more fun.

What about it is beyond comprehension? True, we can't "experience" non-existence (maybe a deep coma would count?) but I see no reason I can't comprehend it. I mean...you realize there was a past, right? Before you were born? I'm certain you don't think this whole universe popped into existence when you were born...so in that comprehension of the past before you were born, you comprehend your own non-existence. That's not so scary is it?

I asked you to imagine for a moment that this life is all you have, can you not do it?

I recognize that I did not always exist. That doesn't bring me any comfort at all to returning to nonexistence.

Perhaps the buddhist would say, "it's your desire to exist eternally which causes you suffering".

The only point I was making is that we don't all share your discomfort.

What, and then you're dead? Or you keep living it over and over

I'm reasonably certain that she meant the first. But answer both if you feel like it.

That's fine, I am glad you don't feel the distress that I do, it sucks.

I'll let you in on a little secret. It sucks a lot more when one is young and one has lots of years ahead of one to explore. Once one does explore one's adult years more, it becomes a lot easier. Death doesn't feel quite so tragic.

Life is eternal. And it is not some repeat the same thing kind of mentality. It is life eternal where it is always new, never looking back. It is called hope. It is a good thing.

I have imagined it, it seems pointless. Heck, I can break any rule and live like hitler and have no consequence's.

You realize that Hitler had to kill himself to avoid the consequences of his actions...right?

What an odd thing to say.

It's called despair, it can only exist if hope does, for despair is born when hope is crushed.
