I explained it succinctly on a thread here at CF quite some time ago...

What distinguishes Russia from other major powers in the word today is that is actually ruled by an ordinary statesman and not some warmongering ideologue. By comparison, this gives quite a positive view of Moscow. Russia has a major role to play in history in the years to come, if she plays her cards right, a role that neither America nor Europe are at this time capable of playing. In the face of an increasingly aggressive Islam and an ascendant China, I don't see why we should be wishing anything but the best for Russia at this time.

Seven years on, and history has borne that out so far...

You do realize that Putin is kowtowing to China now, do you not?

Ever since Sino-Russian ties began to warm up a few years ago, observers have been wondering how Russia would get used to its junior status in this unequal partnership.

With his fifth visit to Beijing on June 25, which lasted less than 24 hours, Russian President Vladimir Putin has finally given us some clues.
Putin’s China Visit Put His Weakness and Desperation on Full Display

Russia meantime has slid from "partially free" to "not free" as Putin gained control over the judiciary, and now is free to commit crimes and use the state apparatus to criminalize opposition.

Some in America see this as the way of the future. "Useful fools", Lenin called them.

Given the relentless hostility they've faced from the US and the EU, it's not surprising. It makes sense for them to look for new markets to sell their gas.

Nonsense. There are opposition rallies in Russian cities, opposition media, even opposition parties in the Duma. Given that Putin has approval ratings that Western heads of state can only dream of, he hardly has any reason to suppress opposition. In fact it's better for him if there are a few pro-Western liberal hipsters remaining active in Moscow and St. Petersburg, just so that the Russians don't forget who these people are, an inoculation of sorts...

Birds of a feather, after all.

As there were in Czarist times. So long as they had no power. If any looked to become a threat, they were removed.

As does Kim Jong Il. For the same reason.
