  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Confession ...

Well here's the curve ball. He was dunked as a baptist years before.

Are EO Anabaptists or do they believe you have to be baptized INTO the church?
FYI, there is only ONE baptism, which is into Jesus.

I've always thought the title 'Metropolitain' of the RO is a cool title. Pope is ho'hum, I guess because I was RC. Primate is a little better but, no offense, seems a little redundant as all men are primates. ;)

Bwhahahahahahaha!

ROFL!

God be gracious to me a sinner.

Ok, thanks...now where do they get this direction to baptize by water into the church?

Through the training they receive from those who laid hands upon them and taught them.

So how does the EO reconcile there only being ONE baptism required for a believer to them requiring another one when adhering to their denom?

Not so fast... that's not what's happening.

A person who was baptized in the name of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit would not be baptized again, only confessed, chrismated and allowed to partake of The Holy Eucharist. This 'completes' what may be missing, not replacing anything.

Couple this together with the questions to the newcomer as to what they believed happened at their baptism.

It's certainly a pastoral matter to determine what should be done.

Thanks, that was not clear from what was posted. So truly saved Christians are NOT water baptized again if they move to the EO?

just pointing this out, the Catholic Church does not rebaptize Christians who join the Catholic Church (assuming they were bapized with water and in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost)

The understanding of salvation is very different in the EO.

I copied something that might help clear this up.

The Orthodox Church makes no judgment concerning the efficacy or validity of baptisms performed by other denominations, as regards people who are members of those respective denominations. The precise status and significance of such baptisms has not been revealed by God to the Orthodox Church; however, as a practical matter, they are treated as non-efficacious unless and until the person joins the Orthodox Church. Persons coming to Orthodoxy from other denominations, and who had been baptized with water in the name of the Trinity, are generally not received by holy baptism, but instead through holy chrismation, after which their former baptism is deemed to be efficacious. The final decision as to the mode of reception to be used in each case rests with the bishop. When there is doubt as to whether or how the person was previously baptized, a conditional baptism is employed, in which the officiant says something of the form of "if you are not yet baptized, I baptize you..." The need for conditional baptisms is motivated not only by factual uncertainties regarding the original baptism, but also by the uncertainty of some of the baptismal theology regarding the precise conditions for the validity of baptism. (The Church holds that one cannot be certain that opinions which are offered by pious theologians, but on which the Church has not made an authoritative pronouncement, are correct, and even authoritative pronouncements can have multiple interpretations which the Church has neither definitively endorsed or rejected.)

I bolded the parts concerning my husband, the priest and the bishop.

So what's the difference between just 'saved' and 'truly saved' stan1953?
I'm still trying to understand the past tense implication of "Saved". It goes right over my head. I suppose I didn't get the invitation to that judgement thing some seem to have attended.
