  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, the New Jerusalem is Heaven.

And by home, I mean the eternal dwelling places of our spirits.

Revelation 21:2
I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

The New Jerusalem comes down out of heaven, but is distinct from it.

As for the dwelling place of our spirits, I dont believe in disembodied spirits. People will have their resuerrection bodies.

:)

I see what you mean, if it's a belief you have, believe it, but don't accept it as truth.
So should I believe that people who are dead are are actually alive?
And these living dead people are alive in hell, in torment and anger?
And should I believe all of this is true without any scriptural support whatsoever?
And should I disbelieve the bible which states that the wages of sin is death, just because Dr. SoAndSo says that the wages of sin is eternal separation from God and dead sinners would choose hell while still being dead. (Yet somehow, not dead, but alive)

By heaven it means sky or space or atmosphere.

Resurrected bodies are for the believers only. Both body and soul will be destroyed in hell for those who choose to reject Jesus and God.

Ah, Hell. Interesting topic.

Of course, we have Rob Bell's new book on hell, which personally I think is based on wishful thinking and nothing Biblical.

For me Hell is a hard concept. How can a God who loves someone so much torture them forever for being deceived? Yet, how could a just God not? It's a paradox for me.

Recently I've begun to reflect on annihilationism. This is the belief that God destroys the souls of the sinner rather then punishing them forever. I'm not entirely sure if I believe this yet, but I feel a pull towards it.

Biblical support of annihilationism would be:

Matthew 10:28 - And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Ezekiel 18:4 - Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins shall die.

Satan's not in charge, because he's being punished too (Revelation 20:10). Hell is primarily a place of punishment for him and the demons that followed him (Matthew 25:41).

It is a place away from and totally devoid of the favor of God, and the love of God (Matthew 8:12, 22:13, 25:30). It is the only truly God-forsaken place; God's Spirit has showed up in concentration camps and refugee camps to provide a measure of comfort, but there will be no such luck in Hell.

Satan is referred to as the God of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4), the prince of the power of the air (Eph 2:1-3 ) and prince of this world (John 12:31). These are titles of royalty and authority.
In Jesus' temptation, He was told by Satan that He, Jesus could receive anything in the world that He desired if He would bow down to Satan (Mt 4:8,9). Conclusion: Satan is in charge of this world. He will continue to be in charge til the end of the tribulation where Jesus returns and wrests the power to rule over the earth from Satan (Rev 19:11-14).
The events of Rev 20:10, which you reference, are future events--after the end of the tribulation.

Hell is a place of eternal torment and it's several bible verses that support this.

Matthew 8:12
"but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Matthew 13:41-42
42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Something I ponder is outer darkness and fire… because the two cannot literally dwell in the same place. I know there are many references to darkness and fire that are not associated with hell… so maybe it is metaphoric.

Here’s an example of fire being use regarding the saved…

his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. 1 Corinthians 3 13-15

What is "hell" to you? For me, it's not the traditional "fire and brimstone" place, but a place full of darkness, decay, and moaning, a complete and total absence from God. Satan rules this darkness. I compare it to John Milton's conception.

Completely agree with you. Alot of people think it is fire and brimstone torture. I believe it is more what you said and the torture part about it is the mind. Emotional torment for knowing they chose the wrong path or chose to ignore the Son of God.

You depict hell as a dark and somber but somewhat benign place. I agree that Satan is in charge but would point out that he hates everyone there with an aggressive hatred. He would do anything to add to their pain or sorrows.
I mean, think of an extreme torture, then take it to the 100th power for an idea of the treatment a resident may expect. This is only my idea of what hell may be like. It is a shame that people are lining up to get in.

Do you personally know anyone who believes - is convinced - that hell is extreme torture to the 100th power lining up to get in?

Timothew,

re: "Hebrews 6 says eternal judgment, Not eternal torture. The judgment is death, and death is eternal."

That is correct. The "wages of sin is death" and not the giving of eternal life to a person so that the person can be tortured forever.
Sorry, you're both wrong, and after months of providing Tim the evidence, I'm done. Believe as you will. No skin off my nose, and not relative to salvation anyway.
