I just read an article about prison gardens in the nz gardener today and thinking what a great idea. One if the womens prisons has a garden that has enough to harvest to give to foodbanks in the area.

Also a good book to read is 'from the ground up' about a jewish lady who left her priveliged home to live with hippies, turned out was a cult, went back home, and then started setting up kitchen gardens in the suburbs which in turn changed many lives..as these wealthy subrubanites were not close to nature, their food being trucked in and their gardens strictly ornamental.

Lovely pics you seem like a rosarian!

Roses don't really do well in my area I'm afraid they all get black spot and I dislike thorns. Also a rose without fragrance is not a real rose in my book.

I do have roses but no blooms at the moment, the ones I have are Iceberg and Mr Lincoln, and Margaret Merril. The will come up around November.

My favourite are sweet peas which are just starting to bloom now.

in the community garden I have just sown wildflowers, the packet said it had a mix of poppies, cornflower, chyrsanthemum and foxglove, so wait and see what comes up! They are good for pollination and attract bees and butterflies. I have secretly scattered them and haven't told my community team yet...If they don't come up they will be none the wiser but if they do it will be a pleasant surprise.
