Do you belong to a community garden?

They are wonderful and also teach good gardening skills, esp if you do not have land of your own.

I wish we did. We live on an island on the coast of SC and in town the government does not let you cut down trees. Conservation and all. Our yard is so shady that a garden is almost impossible. We would be so happy to have a system like England where people are assigned an "allotment" of land so they can make their own garden. My grandmother was a master gardener and we would always be delighted with boxes and baskets of vegetables every summer. Gardening is a joy. I think it is a part of our nature and being to garden. Like Adam we are called to tend to a little Garden of Eden of our own!

yeah I'm part of one of those, and I have learned some stuff. but Florida has some harsh months where no one can do much because too hot. so right now no one is doing anything much, just letting wild vines grow.

Most of ours are created on parkland. The park is usually a field not covered in trees. Or only at the edges. a garden wont take up too much space.

Most people if they cannot garden on their soil at home build raised beds or have veges and frui in pots and containers.,

theres a working bee on this morning and im going to plant some blueberry bushes as well as potatoes and maybe the choko, I think the frosts have past and its getting into spring here.

In my part of the world. The world is round and im in the southern hemisphere.

Planted the blueberries and potatoes. I now have potatoes in a tub at home in hay and they are early one so should be ready by christmas.

We are currently in the late summer heat. Not much will grow. Our sun-chokes even dried up.

Hi Folks,
I had a dear friend who was a pensioner, with no garden but some space at the back of her house to put some tubs and plant pots. I learnt so much from her...she grew beans in pots, and all sorts of veg'...it was amazing!

With all the people going to food banks in Britain, some organized allotments and instruction on how to grow stuff,would be a good thing to do. I saw a programme on the telly recently showing a small Welsh village with high unemployment doing just that.

They did it on a large scale in cuba out of necessity.
While it may seem like a hobby to some people, it really is something good for people to do, esp those who are retired or unemployed.

Any excess harvest goes to the foodbanks here. Volunteers who worked in the garden are free to partake.

Has anyone seen faith like potatoes? Good movie...about farming, but also, how God can transform a farmer who can reach out to others.

I was watching around the world in 80 gardens. It seems like the us people arent really into gardening like the brits and nzers are.

It may be to do with climate but gardening isnt seen as much value.

For example, in nyc, people wanted to create a community garden but local govt bylawsmake it next to impossible. You need to be rich if you want one, and then perversely, its seen as a status symbol.

But i heard in portland oregon ppl really into it, even on their verges and started guerilla gardening.

I think cos of agribusiness, if anyone has read the grapes of wrath you see what corporate america did to the land...turned it into dustbowl. And that was just in a generation.

They don't let you do that here in the US. We have city parks, county parks, state parks, and national parks, but if you try to put a garden in them, they will arrest you.
