  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Some think that this reference in Jeremiah 10 applies to Christmas trees... and frown on those who have them...

What do you think?

1Hear the word which the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel.

2Thus says the LORD,
“Do not learn the way of the nations,
And do not be terrified by the signs of the heavens
Although the nations are terrified by them;

3For the customs of the peoples are delusion;
Because it is wood cut from the forest,
The work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool.

4“They decorate it with silver and with gold;
They fasten it with nails and with hammers
So that it will not totter....

By the way - Merry Christmas everyone !!!

worldly knowledge allows us only to see in part ... like looking in a murky mirror ....

JS: Years ago I did studies into the origin of the Christmas tree. First there are two. One is the Yule Tree that goes back to paganism. The other had two Christian sources; The Paradise Play and the Trinity Triangle. These two traditions formed in two different areas of Europe. First I explain the Trinity Triangle.

The Trinity Triangle was a series of benches stack to form a triangle often made of wood. These were dressed with garland for Christ the King, Tinsel also was added for kingship. Then candles we lite for every day and for twelve days until on the Epiphany the whole triangle was glow in sparkling lights.

The paradise Play: It was the basic story of Adam and Eve, in a play during the middle ages. They placed a fir tree on stage and dressed it in apples to represent the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It was put on during Advent. The Roman Church suppressed this play as improper behavior started to migrate into it.

The people responded by bringing that tree into their homes and decorating it with apples. Legend has it a visiting priest saw this and was upset saying they brought the fall into their homes. So these enterprising stubborn people saved the Eucharist and hung these on the tree as well calling it now the Tree of Life. They invited the priest over who was lucky he didn't have a heart attack.

They repented and created host cookies, you can sometimes find these in cookie cutter sets even today. These cookies they hung on that tree and when they invited that priest back he blessed their tree. That would have been the end except both these traditions spread, one west the other east. They met somewhere history states near the Rhine River, where for the first time both images sat in people homes during Christmas.

No one knows when those two symbolic images for the birth of the King came together, it simply happened and once it happened the tree spread. Yet note the symbols of the original Christmas Tree. These are kosher and those like them (angles for example) that link back to Christ. But the Yule Tree never died either they are still seen today and those are the ones the Bible condemns.
