I think it comes down to convictions to be honest. Someone earlier said this topic falls in a "grey area" which I agree with. the obvious sins...porn for lusting, sacreligous movies etc. should definately be avoided, but when it comes to LOTR I think it's weather or not you feel God wants you to watch it...some people wont feel convicted about fiction movies and I feel it is ok for THOSE people to watch it as long as they KNOW it is fiction. Others will feel like they have the conviction to avoid it...in that case I would say those people should definately not watch it.

I think the difference between LOTR and Harry Potter is that Harry Potter is directed toward a younger fanbase who are more likely to believe what they see. I think if there is a 35 year old who is not able to see LOTR without knowing it's fiction, then they definately shouldnt watch it. On the other hand, I watch LOTR and realize it's fiction. At no point do I leave the theatre/living room with the idea that I can cast spells or find a magical ring. Different people have different weaknesses and need to act according to what their weaknesses are.

Ya i can understand some limits LOTR was written by a christian. but im talking about 99.9 percent of tv being about sex drugs or killing. ( Unless you go for the educational channels and even that depends)

There is NOTHING wrong with watching/reading fiction about fantasy or the occult.
If you delibereatly put restraints on what you can/can't do, nothing good will come from it, you'll become more paranoid and bitter.
For example, just becasue I'm atheist, it doesn't mean I don't pick up the bible for a good laugh or two (I suggest reading Deuteronomy 25:11-12 NLT ).
So just because you guys are christian, it doesn't mean you can't read LOTR, or play d&d or whatever, and still keep yoiur faith.
Reading the bible never made me Christian, so why should watching Charmed change your beleifs?

Newsboy, you are 100% right. My wife and I limit ourselves to PG13 movies for the most part and even then are very selective. But I do think it's more about what the movie is trying to say. American History X has a very powerful and positive message about racism despite lots of questionable content. And much of the content is necessary to communicate the story properly. But even G-rated Aladdin promotes stealing as a positive!!! "Gotta steal to eat, gotta eat to live, otherwise we'd get along." Um, no you don't. Get a job like the rest of us.

Bottom line is this. Movies and television are influencing the unchurched around us to live even worse lifestyles to the destruction of our society. And the kicker is this. Christians are to blame for this. Why? America still considers itself about 40% Christian (down from about 70% just a few decades ago). If Christians didn't support all this trash, it wouldn't make money and it would cease to be on TV. So, it's not only whether YOU can handle it. It's what you want to support with your money (or Nielsen ratings points, or TiVo tracking).

Oh it wont change my beliefs, but witchcraft and the occult are from satan, so why would a believer want to take part in that?

I think you're wrong about "they still do put ties in you etc open doors".

Our Tv today is like what the Romans use to have, the Games in the Coliseum. They may have started off some what calm, but real soon they got real bloody. That pretty much what TV is doing, use to be able to sit down and watch shows with your kids, not any more, you never know what **** they are going to show you next. It in your face attitude. They want you to think and act the way they are showing you on TV. It there own Verson of there right & wrong. Its just they have it backwards. To them they believe it right.

First off there is a difference between a video game and a movie. A movie is not interactive. You sit and watch. You are not going to absorb witchcraft into you by watching a movie anymore than a Hindu will get into Christianity simply buy watching a movie that has some Christian themes into it. Video games are a bit different. It's interactive and games are meant to be played over and over and over and over again. Anybody who practices anything be it martial arts to singing will tell you that repetition is the key. I would be more concerned about someone playing these occult video games over and over and over and over and over again than someone watching a Harry Potter movie. Occult studies is just that something you study mainly BEFORE you choose to work any skills. Video games can have you doing all kinds of things without you once taking the time to study and KNOW what in the world you are doing. So I think movies are just fine. Video games require you to interact with repetition.
