  6. We are no longer allowing posts or threads that deny the existence of Covid-19. Members have lost loved ones to this virus and are grieving. As a Christian site, we do not need to add to the pain of the loss by allowing posts that deny the existence of the virus that killed their loved one. Future post denying the Covid-19 existence, calling it a hoax, will be addressed via the warning system.

Christians celebrate birthdays?

    Rick:

By way of reminder, although Pharaoh's baker was hanged on Pharaoh's birthday, Pharaoh's butler was also restored to his butlership on Pharaoh's birthday (Genesis 40:21). IOW, not only bad things are associated with people's birthdays in scripture.

Having said that, however, I do agree with some of the points that you and others have made here.

First of all, PERSONALLY (I'll do as my own conscience dictates, but not attempt to force others to do the same), I much prefer the day that I was BORN AGAIN SPIRITUALLY to the day of my natural birth. As such, I never make a big deal out of my own birthday.

Secondly, having grown up with 7 siblings (4 sisters and 3 brothers...another brother died before I was born), I've DEFINITELY witnessed, FIRSTHAND, the type of selfish attention that others have sought to bring upon themselves in celebrating their birthdays. In fact, I have one sister who was "reknowned" for planning her own celebrations from the time that she was a little child (she's still as self-centered as ever today).

Thirdly, as a married man with 3 young children, I still see the same type of self-centeredness surrounding birthdays within my own immediate family. In fact, it was my wife's birthday just 3 days ago on October 21st (I was kinda hoping that Harold Camping was right and that the world was going to end that day :)). My parenthesised joking aside, birthdays in my immediate family have been grievous to me in one sense...

My wife has badgered me (she's good at that...sort of like Delilah with Samson) endlessly and coerced me into spending exhorbitant amounts of money for our children's birthdays...not to mention her own. Once, just last year, I think that we spent $700 on our 5-year-old daughter's birthday. As far as I'm concerned, that's terrible stewardship of that which truly belongs to the Lord. For those who might think that I'm more concerned about money than I am about my own children, nothing could be further from the truth. I love my children dearly...enough to try to teach them not to be COVETOUS and SELF-CENTERED and to live as pilgrims and strangers in this world. Unfortunately, my "better half" is not presently of the same mindset and she goes so far as to use our children as "weapons" against me at times to get what she wants. IOW, whereas I try to discuss such things privately with her, she'll deliberately bring them up in front of the children to coerce me into doing things her way so that the children don't equate my trying to be a good steward with a lack of love for them. Sorry to get all personal, but this is a personal matter with me and it extends even beyond birthdays.

I never meant to insinuate that birthdays are the problem. For this very reason, I was careful to end my post by saying that "my personal problems", as you call them, "extend even beyond birthdays". Quite frankly, the type of covetousness and self-centeredness that I described are way too prevalent within my own family...much to my own chagrin. I can only curb such in my own life, though, as I have no authority over other people's wills. Anyhow, it's really a failure for some to "lose their lives that they might find them" that is the problem. It's only magnified at birthdays. Finally, I tell my children, almost daily (if not daily), that I thank God for their lives and that they truly are gifts from God. At the same time, however, God expects me (and my wife) to train them up in the way that they should go. As far as I'm concerned, covetousness and self-centeredness are not that way. Again, birthdays are not the cause of such, but the effects of such ofttimes manifest more openly on such days.

P.S. Your attempts at "counseling" were a bit over the top...to say the least.

I'm sorry. I did not intend to offend and certainly know that I could never do anything to solve it...but hey, you were the one that did vent -and the forum is about birthdays...
I only wanted to also state that the problems you told about were not really related to the OP, but as you said, you realize that.
We all have issues and they take a lifetime to work out sometimes. I know ours are like that. Some have this issue and some that, cause we're all human beings living in fallen natures -though we who are redeemed have to learn to walk in the new man nature, and that takes training for all of us.
Peace to you and yours! and I did not intend to offend, but you were sure sad about things that had no relation to the OP itself, and that was why I addressed it

So? -They were born, weren't they? Is there a law against being born?

I'm sure there is & in more than one place.
So Satanists esteem them above all others.
Ever play the game "Clue"? Get one. Satan in the Party Room with a Birthday Candle.
BTW, the issue is of conscience, not law. You're about tenth in line to have to be told that.
Do you ever read more of a thread than the page you happen to be on?
