Hi folks, in the UK we have what is known as ALPHA courses discussing christianity. Can anybody enlighten me on why they chose to call it ALPHA ??

I'm pretty sure Radagast is right, since ALPHA tends to mean "beginning" and the course is meant for novice Christians.

my best guess is because it is a beginners course, it would be likened to Alpha as in alpha omega . at one point in the program there's a time when people can pray with the leaders of the course to receive the holy spirit .
