I don't know about you but God protects me in-spite of myself sometimes. I was involved in a hail storm yesterday... I had just gotten off work and was driving home. I don't like talk radio so I never hear warnings from such sources... I was just happy to be going home... I had (previously) decided not to do anything THIS YEAR in the since of gardening because I didn't have time...
However, I got the OVERWHELMING urge to pull off at a local nursery and get some seed potatoes. Potatoes, I might add, that I am aware I probably wont' have time to plant. lol
To continue my story, I pull in to the nursery parking lot and get out of my car... As I am locking the door behind me a gush of wind hits my face and and it begins to suddenly rain. "Oh, I'm gonna get wet" I think.. so I walk quickly but with no real since of urgency into the nursery building.. I no more than make it to the overhang (porch section of the building) but not quite through the threshold (actual building itself) when I begin to hear loud pounds on top of the building. I ask, is that hail? the owner goes. "yes it is and I'm not happy about it"... I then look behind me (hail now pounding the building so bad it is impossible to hear anything else) and golf ball size hail is pounding the parking lot.
My car has two dents but no real damage... I was completely unaware that I was in any danger whatsoever until the danger had passed.
This is an example of how God protects us of things we are not aware or conscious of. Sometimes we realize it afterwards and sometime we are never none the wiser.

why are you struggling ???

Because, when I clicked on a link on Index page
it took me to a blank page
Until today _I could only read threads while, I remained 'signed-out'
Today... does seem to be 'better' here in Golden Eagles :prayer:
But we will have-to wait and see

LOL so if you hadn't sought to impulse buy some seed potatoes
you would have been driving in your car when the hail hit WOW!!!!

Glad your car survived the pounding

Yes, seed potatoes that I had previously decided not to bother with... however, while inside the building, since I wasn't' going to leave anytime soon. i bought the seed potatoes and two 14' x 14' nets for my blackberry bushes. Last year the birds ate all my blackberries. This year I decided to eat them myself. :)

I may or may not have made it through the storm okay in my car. I suppose I could have pulled off the road or something. But the storm hit very suddenly and there was little response time. I was, in fact, much safer inside a building and not moving down the road. There were some straight line winds and several injuries (one fatal) involved in the storm. I just cannot get over how suddenly it took place. There were a few branches in my yard when i got home and some debris but nothing that looked too bad. I believe I was in danger of some variety and God sent me to safety.

We lost our redcurrants to the birds last year also :)

We have to harvest our wild blackberries early because the bears, birds and wildlife strip the bushes overnight

Thank God you are ok Connie; we have had storms like that where cars were totaled and people killed by debris from microbursts/straight line winds.

Enjoy those potatoes with God's blessings  ^_^

Yes, I'm glad to see you too dave. :)

Gail, I have to plant those potatoes before I can enjoy them. lol. I have nets now for the blackberries. Yes, the overnight thing happened last year. I had bushes full of blackberries and then as soon as they were ripe (overnight) the birds got them. Probably took an hour at best for them to wipe me clean.

Question.. when you harvest them early, how early and how do you then get them ripe?

Bramble [blackberries] have a staggered ripening time
[iow: not ALL 'READY' at once]

We pick them when they are full BLACK and swollen
Your 'nets' securely closed, should protect your harvest

I know you have to plant them...I was being hopeful for you ^_^

I meant as soon as I see them ripe, we pick them right away.
We have wild bushes all long the property, and we just check them daily.
We placed nets on some close to the house in the past, but even the smaller ground critters got them (chipmunks, squirrels, foxes) even before the bears, so we have to act fast if we want a treat .
We are thinking of a garden this year too, now that we landscaped last year and removed a few large oak trees.
Then again....we compete with the deer and turkeys, and smaller wildlife  It is WILD here ^_^

both sets of great grandparents had farms with veggies planted. I often wonder how they kept the kritters away. My great grandparents were smack dab in the middle of 200 + wooded acres in southern missouri. there were wild everything there. Grandma always had a really big garden ... there were wild animals there too. if they had bears I never saw one. I walked the woods all of the time saw an occasional fox, dear or ground squirrel .. (chipmunk) I don't know how grandma kept the wild animals from getting her stuff. She even harvested walnuts (not letting the squirrels have any).. We used to go blackberry picking all the time... Grandpa had little trails cut out through the woods with his tractor... and along the trails were blackberries ... he had hayfields too and along the edge of the hayfields were blackberries as well. I have no idea how she managed to get those kritters to leave her stuff alone or if she just had enough to share effectively with the wildlife. I guess I will never know. :) I remember lots and lots of blackberry jam (and wine)... same with the elderberries..... and then grandpa decided to make his own syrup. I remember eating pancakes and I left uneaten syrup on my plate. He said, "Connie there is a gallon of maple sap on your plate. Do you have any idea how long I had to cook that so you could have those pancakes? Stop wasting. " lol

Thanks for sharing those memories
It sounds like a great childhood ~ I loved that stuff, even as a kid...and still do
I think i just remembered how grandma managed how not to share her stuff. we ate a lot of squirrel. lol
ROFLOL ^_^ I won't eat squirrel
But you can plant flowers like marigolds around the garden, and they keep the critters and bugs off the plants ...and it looks pretty
We also put a wire fencing around our past gardens, which worked fine.
The chipmunks didn't seem interested in the crops we had ;)

Hi peeps. Still on my meds though the doctor says I'm not crazy
I don't feel like doing any of the things that I normally do and you all know me...example, painting, cooking, playing music. I drift from couch to bed and barely give Juliette her insulin twice a day. So much has happened,,,,mom has agreed to sell the house. The tv commercials don't lie when they say that depression hurts everyone. I just can' t be here anymore. Working day in and day out just to pay her mortgage and have no say as to where I put a flower pot. Last fall I planted bulbs and they misteriously ended up on "her side" of the garden. She said the squirrels put them there. My washcloths keep disappearing, my socks, my cooking utensils are never in the same place twice. I am so very tired of this chaos. Although an artist, I am very organized and appreciate knowing that whatever I put there, stays there. A control struggle? No, I am way beyond that. I have no fight left in me, no defense whatsoever. Alan is taking care of my sick leave papers and my daughter is dealing with gram for the sale. I honestly think that having a little place of my own (with hubby and son) would begin the healing process. On the other hand, I feel guilty to leave her now that she is old. I have expressed that we find her a nice place and set her up before doing our own moving. Am I appeasing this guilt? Is it legitimate? I also feel bad for Alan as he has been bearing so much of this. I had one session of therapy and have another scheduled on the 2nd of May. Please keep me in your thoughts folks. I appreciate the support that I have here more than you know. Love yas.

I am so sorry for your pain Yvie :(
Praying for your direction, strength, hope, and peace in this trial (which will pass!)
It isn't an easy time with aging parents ~ been there for all 4 of ours :o
You do need to take care of yourself, so you can care for your family...so no guilt allowed
Thoughts and prayers are with you ~ God bless you :crossrc:

my cousin had a similar problem with her mom... it destroyed her marriage. I think it matters who lives with who sometimes... Control issues are tough to deal with. and women are IMPOSSIBLE sometimes. whether they are old or not. I remember my mom rearranging my kitchen one time... It infuriated me....She changed what I did with my coffee pot and my cups... she didn't like the way I had it and she fixed it. lol... I got sooooo mad.

Thank you  and I have been blessed by you all

^_^ Tom!

These are tiny little gnats that come out when the trees leaf out, through May 31.
Then the adults die off , the immatures go into dormancy until next year,or the mosquitoes eat them.
They first swarm in clouds, then after a week or so they start to bite; flying in your eyes, nose and ears, and crawling in and up any opening in your clothing.
They draw blood and leave itchy welts; some people have allergic reactions to them.
They are unhalted by bug spray, when in full bite you must don bug nets and tuck in every piece of clothing pants on up if you go outside.
They are a pain! :p

When they leave the skeeters come out with their diseases, along with ticks and deer flies, but at least you can spray down to protect yourself form them.

I don't like flies of any kind, and especially in my house.
If I can't get them with a swatter, I use hair spray to stop them from flying; it works good for hornets if one gets in ;)

I might be inside a lot in your neck of the woods with hair spray in each hand. :D Now, I think that I know what you're talking about. We have gnats here, but they don't bite. We have the other pesky critters you talked about.
