  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Awhile back, I took quite a beating for even suggesting the link between early Irish monks and the Desert Fathers, and the Egyptians. At the time, I couldn't figure out where I had read it online. Many thanks to St. Patrick and his worthy helper, Patrick B at orthodoxinfo. com:

Fun topic if anyone still wants to discuss. :)

St John Cassian the Roman would provide a link between the desert fathers and St Benedict, I know folks like St Cuthbert were as holy as any in the deserts. It is time we in the west start paying attention to these forgotten saints in Orthodoxy.

Jeff, how come you are so good at putting everthing into as few words as this??? St. John of Shanghai also said the same....I have not heard of St. Benedict, but now I will go look him up! Thanks!

Best darned QC person the distillery's ever seen. Won the Golden Tastebud Award 5 years in a row. It's even rumoured he can tell you the exact date the barley was harvested. ;)

I'd be glad to discuss this. Of course, that assumes that I have time to read the article, which is requisite on me finishing my two 1500-word papers (heck, even starting them would be nice), not having work, not having a headache, and feeling up to being online for long periods of time.

Not for a while will those factors coincide. Oh well. I'll head to St. Brendan's Crossing in Pittsburgh sometime and buy something, then go the Harp and Fiddle for some (OK, a lot) of Arthur (I think he was named Arthur, right?) Guinness' magical potion of perpetual youth.

My wife's family ancestors came from Scotland, near the river Dee. St. Benedict was from Nursia, his sister is St. Scholastica. The parish where I worship is named sfter St. Benedict. My first priest who was transferred down South, was named after another Celtic saint, St. Aidan of Lindisfarne. (Here's an interesting aside: The author Stephen R. Lawhead, born and raised in the USA, who now lives in Oxford, England, wrote the historical novel Byzantium, an 870 page paperbck about St. Aidan)
The above mentioned author has re-appearing in another triology about the cross, the lance used to pierce Jesus' side and the chalice, a group of people called the Celi De. I printed an article about them last year from a web site whose page address I'm no longer sure of; there is however a site where those interested can receive a daily digest about Celtic saints, which is along the lines of The Prologue of Ochrid. The last I knew they were at Orthodox-theo@snet.net. A few clicks in the right places will yeild enough info to satisfy anyone.

Is St. Benedict of Nursia the same benedict who had the sister St. Scholastica? My icon teacher did a most beautiful icon of St. Benedict which I want to buy from him some day when I have the money.
 Yes, they are one and the same! Somewhere beneath a piece of paper, or tucked in between some things in my house is a small booklet about St. Benedict, which I'll probably find when I'm not looking for it.

Thanks Virginian for those sites!

A word though about celticorthodoxy.org to the non-Orthodox who might be reading: that site is from a group that is not cannonical Orthodox. However, their list of Saints can be compared to Orthodox sources ...we take the good, and leave the bad.

My old parish had a Fr. Benedict amongst the clergy. I could give you his email if you want, I'm sure he'd be happy to discuss St. Benedict with you. Fr. Benedict is an extremely kind, gentle soul, and I'm sure he wouldn't mind an email.
