About baptism: It is frustrating when people tell you that one's baptism is not valid, and it is also (usually) bad theology to say so. I am Protestant (Pentecostal), and I believe baptism should be done by full immersion. However, that does not mean that baptism with sprinkling (the usual Catholic way) is invalid. The important thing is that baptism happens in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit - which is the way it happens in Catholic church. Do not let anyone tell you that sprinkling is 'not good enough'.

The most important thing for you now is to sort out your relationship with God. It is a good advice to confess to your local priest. If he is a sensible man, you can talk to him about confirmation, and maybe also first communion if you are not sure about whether you have received it.

God is always willing to receive a person that turns to Him - no matter how 'bad' that person has been. I am sure many of us will pray for you, whether we are Orthodox, Protestant or Catholic, and say: Welcome back to the family of God!

You receive the Holy Spirit when you forsake sin and trust in Jesus Christ, when He does the work of transformation removing your heart of stone and giving you a heart of flesh. It is not when you get physically baptized. Baptism is not required for salvation (ala. the repentant thief on the cross). Physical baptism is a symbol of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and a public profession of faith in Jesus Christ, and following in obedience to Him.

There are no explicit examples of infant baptism in the Bible, since an infant has no way to profess faith in Jesus Christ. Nor [Roman Catholic] Confirmation, nor First Communion, as a means of bestowing extra merit as taught by the Roman Catholic church. You are eligible to partake in the Lord's Supper if you have repented of sin and are trusting in Jesus Christ, but again, there is nothing in the Lord's Supper that sacramentally bestows extra grace or merit as Rome falsely teaches.

great answer

I was baptized the catholic way, but I was told it is no good. It has got to be done the right way, a full immersion.

I wan't to recieve the spirit of the Lord but I don't know anyone who can baptize me that way. Should I do the catholic sacrament of confirmation (I think), I have the 1st communion.

First of all, the Catholic way is correct--You have been baptized in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Total immersion, while preferable--and done by some Catholic priests--is not full immersion is not necessary for you to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. I received that same Baptism, and I was baptized "the Catholic way."

BTW, When speaking about the Roman Catholic Church, or churches in communion with Rome, it is proper to use capital letters, as in Roman Catholic or Lutheran.

I have put non-denominational because I do not practice the catholic faith, although I'm baptized and have the 1st communion done as a child. My sins are very bad. I am also afraid. This is a very small community where I live, although the priest cannot divulge what is said.

There is no sin that can separate us from the love of God.

There is only one baptism. Either you are baptized or you are not. Baptism is a work of God, not of man, and therefore is capable of doing what God desires for it to do. Rejoice in the fact that you are a baptized child of God, and look for a local congregation to unite with so that you may continue to hear the Word and receive the Sacraments.

Thank you.

And bless you all.

Dear Guerrero,
Do not be afraid of Jesus. He is calling you to accept His gift of Salvation.
All you need to understand is:
*God loves you - John 3:16 and there is only way to get to heaven John 14:6
*you have sinned- Romans 3:23 as all of us have
*Christ died for you - Romans 6:23 He gave his life for you as a payment for your sins
*You receive Jesus' gift of salvation John 1:12 by telling Jesus you accept this gift
*Know you are saved John 3:36
Who ever believes in the Son of God has eternal life. Amen

The Holy Spirit comes into us the minute we accept this gift. Baptism is an outward sign to the community around us that we have given our lives to Jesus.

May you give your sins to Jesus and accept that He has paid for them in your place when He died and arose again.

If you were baptized the Catholic way you were baptized sufficiently. Catholics have been baptising for almost 2000 years and know how to do it. There is ONE baptism, not many baptisms. Accept that and make the most of it. You have to live your baptism, which is possible through faith.

But I feel the need to confess my sins also. I'm desperate. What should one do? I have asked for the spirit but I find nothing but fear and travail.
I went to confession just a few days ago. It's a healthy thing to do. Not easy but spiritually good for you. And Catholics (and the Orthodox) have confession while the others don't. You have figured out you need it. Find the courage to do it. I'll pray for you.

Ask at a baptist church they do full immersion.

But you can ask any elder christian to baptise you, who was the one that told you the gospel? Get in touch with them first. Tell them you have repented and believe. If you have any fruits of repentence, show them. I.e if you stole, return what you stole. If you did drugs, get rid of them. Etc.

Cant speak for anyone else but if you were sprinkled as a baby, thats nice but you didnt repent or believe as a baby. That is more of a christening or dedication, based on your parents faith but when you now know right from wrong and believe the truth you can step out in faith yourself.

Jesus parents sacrificed two turtledoves at his birth but he STILL decided to be baptised at age 30. Even when john the baptist pointed out he didnt need to as he was sinless. But the holy spirit came down on him like a dove at his baptism.

I may have been baptized as an infant (sprinkled), Catholic, as my parents started out Catholic
I was baptized as a Baptist as a teenager (baptistry)
I was baptized as a Pentecostal as an adult (in the river full immersion)

I think that is enough! I do not see any problem with being baptized three times. But... I do not intend to be baptized a fourth, unless the Lord lays it on my heart to!

Well I mean if you truly feel you've been baptized wrong you could simply find a church that does immersion outside of your church home. I mean where you get baptized doesn't matter.

The Apostle Paul wanted little to do with Baptising...

1 Corinthians 1:12-18King James Version (KJV)
12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;

15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.

16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.

17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

I don't think there's any cause for alarm! If you have been truthfully baptized into the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit - if water and the Word was involved, you are baptized into Christ. The amount of water used does not steal away your regeneration and salvation, because the promise is not in the measurement of the water but in Christ Jesus alone!

I think anyone who rigorously hold to the idea of a full immersion either overlook or are not aware of early church practices. Look at what the early church taught:

"But concerning baptism, thus shall ye baptize. Having first recited all these things, baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit in living (running) water. But if thou hast not living water, then baptize in other water; and if thou art not able in cold, then in warm. But if thou hast neither, then pour water on the head thrice in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." - Didache

I'm not saying the Didache has the same authority as the Holy Scriptures, but I'd be skeptical to any modern enlightenment that goes hard against it.

God bless!

Why did you leave the Catholic Church? Could it be that you are leaving the Church which has existed since the very beginning of the Christian faith, which is not a good thing to do?

PS -- I am no fan of Catholic sprinkling, inasmuch as the first Christians practiced immersion and the Orthodox (God bless 'em) still do in keeping the tradition alive.

First of all, calm down! God loves you, sent His Son, our beloved Lord Jesus the Christ, to die for you, and you apparently have been given the gift of faith.

Take a deep breath. Now....do you want to know from this convert from Evangelicalism why the Catholic faith is true? I ask this because your statement about wanting to confess your sins to someone shows that you are still very Catholic at heart. I think you are just confused.

We can do a PM if you wish.
