  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In this post you have just stated that it is possible to fall from grace. I'm glad to hear that :) This means that the idea of "once saved always saved" is false.

Falling from grace does not mean one loses one's salvation. Falling from grace does not mean that they cannot come back via the power of the Holy Ghost. You underestimate God's power.

...I've been considering this a bit. We're going to be adopting our third child. Because the adoption is an international adoption, the wait for us will be a long one. Once that child is in our hands, that child is ours. Someday our child may decide to leave home for some reason. No matter what that child does will he (or she) be any less our child? Once you are a parent, you are always a parent and you cannot write off your children. You may say you are writing your child off, but the fact remains, that is your child.

Hence my username ;)

And you have this amazing ability to alter your own DNA from where?

Exactly we have no more an ability to change the spiritual birth and our new nature in Christ anymore than we have the ability to change our DNA. Good point!

When I became Christian, God changed my life. So I am born again.

And what does this 'being born again' mean to your old nature?

Doesn't Paul also say that they are "severed from Christ"? What happens to a branch when it is severed from a vine?

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?
by Alan Yusko

Acts 16:30
30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 And they said, BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, AND THOU SHALT BE SAVED, and thy house.

ALL HAVE SINNED

Romans 3:23
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Isaiah 64:6
6. But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

ALL MUST REPENT (BE SORRY FOR AND TURN AWAY FROM A LIFE OF SIN)

Isaiah 55:7
7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Psalms 38:18
18 For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

Acts 3:19
19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

SIN HAS A PENALTY

Ezekiel 18:20
20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Romans 6:23
23 For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Revelation 20:15
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:8
8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

THE LORD JESUS PAID THE PENALTY ON THE CROSS

Isaiah 53:4
4. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he [was] wounded for our transgressions, [he was] bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

SALVATION IS A GIFT

Ephesians 2:8
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Titus 3:5
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Romans 6:23
23 For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

THE LORD JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN

John 14:6
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Acts 4:12
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

TODAY IS THE DAY OF SALVATION (you are not promised tomorrow!)

2 Corinthians 6:2
2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now [is] the accepted time; behold, now [is] the day of salvation.)

Hebrews 4:7
7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

THE BIBLE SAYS

ALL HAVE SINNED:

Romans 3
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

SIN HAS A PENALTY:

Ezekiel 18
20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Luke 13
3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

JESUS PAID THE PENALTY:

Isaiah 53

YOU MUST RECEIVE THE LORD JESUS:

John 1
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:

Revelation 3
20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

THE POWER OF GOD'S PRESERVATION

"Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." (I Pet. 1:5)

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:" (Philip. 1:6)

I know that I'm going to Heaven because GOD is preserving me. I'm not preserving my own Salvation. I wasn't saved by my good works (Eph. 2:8-9; Rom. 4:5), so I do not STAY saved by my good works. I am KEPT by the POWER OF GOD, not by my own power! God is able to keep me from falling (Jude 24), because I'm HIS child and I'm in the palm of HIS hand (Jn. 10:28-29). Ephesians 4:30 says that I have been SEALED by the Holy Spirit of God until the day of redemption! I'm not worried about losing my Salvation. I KNOW I'm going to Heaven because I'm being preserved by God's power.

THE PROMISE OF ETERNAL SECURITY

"I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." (Jn. 10 v 28 )

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (Jn. 3:16)

I know I'm going to Heaven because God has PROMISED eternal security to all who BELIEVE on His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. To "believe" on Christ is to "receive" Christ, according to John 1:12. During the spring of 1979, I repented of my sins and received Jesus Christ as my Savior. I had been lost in my sins, condemned to Hell forever (Jn. 3:18, 36). Then a man told me how I could be saved from my sins and from Hell by RECEIVING the Lord Jesus Christ. I received Christ, believing that HE ALONE could save me. I trusted in Him totally, for I knew that He was my only hope. I called upon Him to save me and He did (Rom. 10:13, 9-10). He brought me into God's family as a "son of God" (Jn. 1:12; I Jn. 3:2-3). I was a child of the devil, a child of wrath (Jn. 8:44; Eph. 2:2-3), but now I'm eternally secure as a child of God.

If I sin as a child of God, then my Heavenly Father will rebuke and chasten me , just as any good father would (Rev. 3:10; Heb. 12:4-8, but He will not condemn me with the world (I Cor. 11:32). God has promised His children ETERNAL SECURITY.

THE POSSESSION GOD HAS GIVEN HIS SAINTS

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." (Jn. 5:24)

"He that hath the Son hath life; he that hath not the Son of God hath not life." (I Jn. 5:12)

I know I'm going to Heaven because God has already given me ETERNAL LIFE . I'm not waiting to receive eternal life-I ALREADY HAVE it as a present possession. Read the above verses carefully and see for yourself that eternal life is IN Jesus Christ, and that you can receive eternal life RIGHT NOW by receiving Christ right now!

When I received the Lord Jesus Christ as my Saviour, God placed His Eternal Spirit within me and gave me Eternal Life. As a child of God, I'm still waiting to see Jesus, to enter Heaven, and to receive my new glorified body, but I'm NOT waiting to be saved. My soul IS saved, and I know I'm going to Heaven because God has given me Eternal Life.

THE PERFECTION OF GOD'S SAINTS

"For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified." (Heb. 10:14)

"But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin." (Rom. 4 v 5 – 8 )

Have you ever heard the expression "Nobody's perfect?" That isn't true. In God's eyes, the SOULS of all His saints ARE perfect, because they have placed their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for Salvation. Jesus shed His sinless blood to pay for my sins. He OFFERED Himself as a PAYMENT for my sin. He paid my sin debt because I couldn't. By receiving Him as my Saviour, I am also receiving the fact that He has PAID for my sins and that I can now REST in His finished work, because my sins are GONE! My soul (not my flesh) has been made PERFECT through the completed Blood Atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ, and I KNOW I'm going to Heaven!

How about the promise of death to Christians who turn away?

Such as scriptures…..
***Romans 6:16-18
Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

Romans 8:12-13
...we have an obligation--but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

James 1:14-16
...For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full grown, gives birth to death. Do not be deceived my dear brothers.

1 John 5:16
If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death.***

Romans 6:16 is not about Christians who turn away but about whether or not a Christian should and can sin.

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

The verses preceding the above verse place this verse in it's proper context.

Romans 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

Can a Christian sin? The answer to this is obvious.

The verses after this show that grace is a gift. A gift has no conditions attached to it.

Paul's questions are rhetorical.

Romans 6:21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

Paul is asking why do you as Christians want to continue in sin when you know those things bring about death.

Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

If a Christian can lose his or her salvation then they clearly can never have had eternal life.

Jesus should never have said these words if we can lose our gift.

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

There is nothing that can separate the true child of God from Christ.

Now let us look at Romans 8 in which Paul clearly states that the child of God cannot lose his or her salvation.

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

It is impossible for a person to be a true born again child of God and then become unborn... We are either or of the flesh or of the spirit...

Jesus has given me a free gift. I did not earn it nor deserve it.

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

I used to be a child of wrath but not any longer...

Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

It is required that we believe the gospel.

1 Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

1 Corinthians 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

1 Corinthians 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

We are saved for good works not by good works.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

I question the salvation of those who believe they are saved one minute and lost the next...

Works are evidence of salvation not a requirement for it...

If you have to work to keep your salvation then you are participating in your salvation and the work of Christ on the cross was not sufficient to save you.

Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

How can you lose eternal redemption? You either have it or you don't.

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Remember Jesus Never Knew False Professors...

John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

I will never perish and I have eternal life... End of Story...

That is why the gospel is called the "good news"!

My good deeds come from the Holy Spirit, not from me so that I cannot boast. Some seem to boast about their good deeds because they think they come from them. who do they think they are? Do they not realise who is responsible for their good deeds?

Why do they think love, patience, joy, hope & self-control are called fruits of the Spirit? Where do they think our light comes from? Do these people even know who God is and what he provides for us?

I may be seen to do good deeds and be obedient yes…but that certainly doesn't come from my wonderful nature, loving heart, & superior intelligence or power. It comes from the Holy Spirit inside of me.

I suggest people read the whole NT and see to whom Paul gives the credit for his goodness. I can assure you, he doesn't give it to himself!

Even Christ, when addressed by the rich man as "Good sir", Jesus replied; "Why do you call me good?" "No one is good but God alone." He also says; "I can do nothing without my Father." That perfect man gave complete credit for anything good in him to his Father, not to himself. Jesus was the most humble man whoever lived and is supposed to be the Christian role model. "He who exalts himself will be humbled." Jesus glorified God and for that reason God glorified His son."

Paul also gives complete credit to God for his conversion & belief. Paul did not wake up one day and say; "Gee, I think I'll become a Christian today." Paul was zapped by the Holy Spirit which changed his whole life. Yes indeed, the Holy Spirit is definitely stronger than the devil. And it’s through His power that we are able to do good works…not by our own might or power!

How then are we able to obey God’s word if we cannot do it by our own strength…simple…walk in the spirit and rely on holy Spirit of Christ to perform a work in you that is perfect and untainted by our own might and power.

It's that little bitty key that opens such a big, big door to our absolute perfection and Life in Him. You know how it is, when your praise for Him just seems to boil up inside you so that you must raise your arms to the sky and say Thank You, thank You, thank You my Lord and Saviour Jesus, the Messiah!

We have to keep working at it.

That was not the question. I asked you And what does this 'being born again' mean to your old nature?

Come on now...something happens to our old sinful nature...what is it? What does Paul say we are to consider ourselves to be?

Now obviously there are no easy answers here and I'm not going to come to an absolute answer in a day, but I keep coming back to:

John 10

25Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, 26but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all[d]; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. 30I and the Father are one."

I used to believe you could lose your salvation but that was before I really knew what salvation was. I just cannot get around these verses to believe that we can be lost again.

thoughts???
