  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Under certain circumstances, yes. But, as the Engineering Officer on "Hunt for Red October" said in response to being asked if they could go to 105% on the reactor (the Commanding Officer would already know the answer to that question in the first place, and that extra 5% would give that submarine an extremely negligible amount of extra speed, which the CO would also know as he is intimately familiar with all aspects of submarine operations, ESPECIALLY including reactor/propulsion plant operations, so that scenario from that movie is quite unrealistic and drives me a little bit bananas just thinking about it... unless the Russian Navy really is that bad... I can't watch submarine movies...), "It's possible... BUT NOT RECOMMENDED!" (I'm watching that movie and I'm all like "shut up, you idiot, like you even know!")

But he asks in such a darned appealing way.

If converting to the Orthodox Church restricts my potential wife pool from 50% of U.S. to 0.5% of the U.S. that is an issue... And i'm only 5'6" i got enough issues with dating as it is!

Hi Michael,
I was 24 and seeking once upon a time. I can relate.

It really is incredibly important in the long term that your (future) wife have the same outlook/worldview as you. The conflicts that can and will arise will cost far more than the perhaps several years of waiting to find someone who will see life the way you do, agree on a common manner of raising children, of going to the same church on Sunday - these are all actually huge things.

Honestly, depending on how desperate you are, if you come to Russia for a while your chances of finding a would-be Orthodox bride are extraordinarily high. Just go hang out in a local church for six months or so. If you did convert you'd be a hot item over here... :)

Seriously, waiting sucks. But a line I got from an old film ("Gotcha") proved to be true - "even a dog has his day". When things click, it'll have been worth the wait.

Maybe Rus you could make your fortune setting up some sort of Orthodox match-making service?

They might kill me for the OT comment, but if you only knew how that movie looks to Russians...
Try to imagine a North Korean (or whatever) film about the American Wild West (or whatever) with cliches, awful fake accents, and bad acting and presentation of what America is really like.
The sailors spontaneously and voluntarily singing a national anthem that they felt less connection with than we do with ours is over the top, and a little like having ours break into a chorus of "Kum-bah-yah" (and the captain smiling and saying "Let them sing").

Yeah I'd recommend saving bucks for a ticket ~ sounds like a treasure trove to me ;)

I'm 5'6" as well, so I know how you feel.

Bear in mind, my friend, that not only are there fewer Orthodox women in the US, but there are fewer Orthodox men as well. So proportionally your odds are just about as good.

Orthodox marrying Catholics and Protestants definitely happens.

M.

I was just going to ask... :)

Out of sheer curiosity's sake, IS it common for Orthodox Christians to marry Catholics? Not many, if any of the other Catholics I know are married to Orthodox folks, but I'm sure it must be more common than I think...

I don't know how common it is, but I know several Orthodox people who are married to Catholics or who were born of a Catholic/Orthodox intermarriage.

I think I know of more Orthodox who are married to Protestants or who were born of a Orthodox/Protestant union, but I am not sure. I never sat down to count.

Check out your local OCF Orthodox Christian Fellowship, or YAL (Greek...no clue if they have a website). Though I've never personally gotten really involved in either of them I do know they're a great avenue to meet many young adults who are Orthodox, Catechumens, etc. I've heard nothing but good about both...especially the OCF. :)

And tis good you're not in a rush. No worries, God will provide! :)
