Reverend Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church persecute gay people by picketing the funerals of gay men who have died of AIDS. They hold up signs denouncing the person who died and saying that this person in is hell. More recently, probably because this picketing was not getting them as much attention as they wanted, they began picketing the funerals of troops who died in Iraq, saying they died as God's punishment for America's acceptance of "homosexuality." They say regularly that God hates f#gs. Their website is

Most Christians, of course, do not agree with Fred Phelps' statements, and many regard him as not truly a Christian. But he considers himself to be a Christian, and he claims that he is upholding God's word from scripture.
Most Christians in the United States do not and never would persecute gay people the way Phelps does, thankfully. A few extremists, like Eric Rudolph, have made violent attacks on gay people, justifying their attacks on the basis of their Christian faith. Most Christians would never support this kind of action. Many Christians in the United States support discriminating against gay people under the law, but this does not rise to the level of persecution, in my view.
