I don't really get it, could somebody reading this (from either side) explain why people seem to hate Calvinism so much? I've read some really ridiculous threads on the subject. My favorite is definitely "I'll never join you Count Calvin" in which Calvinism is likened to Count Dooku and the philosophy of the dark side of the force...

The infantile nature of the comparison aside, why is it that yall rub people the wrong way?

Very simply,
It is hated because it's the truth.
Par for the course, as it were:

John
[18] If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
[19] If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

Calvinism grates on the conscience of those who supplant the Sovereignty and Glory of God with a anthropocentric salvation that elevates man to being the ultimate cause of his salvation, thus glorifying man rather than God.

It follows the lie Satan told Eve, "No, you will not die, you will become like God."

...and which is also proof that the scriptures are the inspired word of God with it's man abasing Truth.

Well, Abe, I am speechless.

That is not something that happens quite often, I can tell you.

I recognize 4 names on that very impresive list of yours and I only read ONE of them.

I feel so stupid and uneducated.

Where do you suggest I start on that list?

Euclid, if you like Geometry
Ptolemy if you like Astronomy with a geo-centric model of the universe
Kepler or Copernicus if you like astronomy with a helio-centric model of the universe
Kant if you like complex philosophy translated from German *shudder*

But I think the fave of them all has GOT to go to the big man, Homer. I recommend the Fagles translation of the Iliad. It's the original epic.

Well Abe....
Have you come to a conclusion about your original question? I for one am thoroughly impressed with your wide and well-read intellect, so I would place great value in your opinion on the matter of the unpopularity of sound biblical theology (you call it calvinism, I believe) among the full- and semi-pelagians, mysticists (some call them charismatics), and self-worshippers (some call arminians) that populate other areas of this forum.

Now, I say well-read assuming that you really have read all the authors you list, and it comes to me now that perhaps I assume too much. If I have, please forgive me, it just seemed in your deleted post that you were inferring that, which is why I was so impressed. I would hate to think you were simply trying to impress without really having consumed and digested all that stunning array of literary giants. I'm sure you wouldn't do that.

I got really burned out posting on the Apologetics forum. I basically took a break.
Where do you think I can be useful posting ?
How have you been?

Hi Bro , yes I know the feeling , I don't spend any time in GA anymore (maybe an odd post) too many folks are just looking to argue and supress the truth .

You could try Soteriology and polls !

also General Theology , but be prepared for scrapping ......... I often take refuge in Semper and friendship court :D

God Bless you friend

I won't say whether I'm a Calvinist or not, but it does always amaze me how misunderstood Calvinism is.

I was on a Catholic message board once and the Catholics there insisted that all Baptists are Calvinists and got very upset when I tried to tell them that this isn't true.

Pardon the pun, but that's what I call invincible ignorance.

they aren't?

Oh definately not. I don't even think Calvinists are the majority.

This is probably going to be taken wrong, so let it be known in advance that there are fantastic baptist churches out there (I go to one). However, the vast majority of baptists in the US have these things in common:
1) rejection of theology in any formal sense
2) neo-monasticism
3) slogans
4) "touch not, taste not, handle not"

(Those of you who are baptists, you know I love you, I'm characterizing mainstream American baptists, not you)

Study to show yourself approved, when the mood strikes you?;)

I'm teasin' ! Watch it with that pitchfork!

Everyone, I want to introduce my friend "geelee".
I was pretty sure I had scared her away from Reform Theology, but it shows to go ya how much I know.
Gee, I recommend you wade around here @ Semper Reformanda & take advantage of "Ask a Calvinist" before ya head for deep water, but you know best.
There's SO many questions that get provoked when we start investigating the doctrines, that it can get confusing, but eventualy you can begin to see how they revolve around the "rosetta tone" of the 5 points (T.U.L.I.P.).

Abe, I serious.

Were do you think I should start? Remember that I am only a beginner, and to swamp me with the heavy stuff would probably just break my mood.

Hope to hear from you soon.

May I recommend "The Sovereignty of God", by Pink, short, but sweet and it's available all online.
