The non-elect will not see the grace of God in the good works of the faithful, though he may see an opportunity to emulate them for the sake of self-glory.

Justified before man. We can not see faith in another, therefore the ir works declare them to be righteous in the court of human observation.

I think it could be argued that the moment they desire it, the desire would be evidence that they are no longer unregenerate.

Romans 1 and 2, esp. 2:15: they know what is right but their desire is always oriented to their own satisfaction and glory.
