But Flat Earth theories (particularly those based on Biblical literalism) do teach that the Earth is a circle. Just not a sphere. The official position of the International Flat Earth Society was that the Earth was actually a circular disc with the North Pole at the centre.

The bible teaches that the earth is round in Isaiah 40:22

It is he that sitteth upon the circle (round) of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in

Martin Luther knew the bible didn't teach the earth was flat.
The description of the heavens being stretch out like a curtain to form a tent over the earth should show you that the earth is being described as a circular disk, not a sphere. Martin Luther did not teach a flat earth, however Cosmas Indicopleustes certainly did in the 6th century. He advocated that the church stop compromising with the pagan Greek science of spherical earth and learn what the bible teaches about the shape of the earth without being unequally yoked with unbelievers. He was Sola Scriptura long before Luther and would have considered Martin Luther inconsistent and serving two masters. If you want to go for real Sola Scriptura, YEC and geocentrism simply don't cut it. The church's compromise with extrabiblical science began long before Copernicus.

And quite right too.

In no way does the verse carry any flat earth connotations. It seems to me that you want to add to what the verse actually says. The heavens are stretched out as a tent. There is no better Hebrew word than chuwg to describe roundness.

Not quite right. The latest cosmology says that the universe is flat. :)
