  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've never met a physician who turned away paying customers, have you?
Do you feel people who spend decades in school learning their trade should be asked to work for free?

I spent decades in school learning a trade, yet my doctor makes ten times as much as I do.

So by "normalizing" relations with the Castros, did we help the Cuban people? Are their lives better now that the embargo is gone? Are they any closer to truly being free?

With Raul Castro talking about converting to Catholicism? I say, there are signs of something changing there.

There was no compromise in the removal of sanctions from Tehran,

Apparently you haven't read the treaty.

Sure, the Castros will both be gone some day, but why should we go out of our way to make their job of oppressing the Cuban people, even easier?

The embargo oppressed the Cuban people just as much as the Castros did.

What makes us think that by doing this, that Cuba will be "a better place" when they are gone?

Cuba has been improving for some time now.

Maybe the embargo has been the reason that Cuba has not played a major role on the world stage to this point.

Actually, they did play a major role on the world stage during the Cold War, especially in Africa.

Like yourself, I am all for the idea of normalizing relations with people. But only when they show that they want to be a part of the world instead of a world problem.

Hmmm. First you say that Cuba hasn't played a major role on the world stage, and then you turn around and say they are a "world problem." Which is it? Because it can't be both. Cuba hasn't been a world problem since 2002 (when they pulled out of Angola), unless having the best medical care in Latin America constitutes a 'world problem.'

Bernie Sanders might be a little left of the Castros..... but then again, I did say "thinking" individuals.

I dare say, Bernie Sanders is a lot sharper than all the Republican candidates, with the possible exception of Carly Fiorina.

To be fair, if the GOP wants to do anything to correct this, they have to win the election in '16.

Not likely. The GOP will likely loose in 2016 for the same reason they lost in 2008 and 2012. The demographics are against them. Younger voters and minorities vote Democrat, and the Millennium generation is huge. And guess what? It is not predominantly white. The reason the Republicans control the House is 1) Congressional districts have been gerrymandered to insure Republican control 2) Young people and minorities are notoriously bad at voting in the bi-elections.

The Pope sidled up to Boehner yesterday, put his arm around him, and spoke to him privately for a few moments. Although Boehner has shared a bit of what the Pope said to him, whatever the Pope really said struck Boehner like a ton of bricks. I don't think it was a remonstration--I suspect it was something that convinced Boehner that he needed to do something that in the end would not be an Ecclesiastes "vanity of vanity" the way politics is.

His resignation did have something to do with the Pope's visit, but I doubt if it had anything to do with what the Pope said. Having the Pope address Congress marked the epitome of his career as far as Boehner was concerned. The only thing left for him to do was pass a budget, and that is best done when he is no longer beholden to the Tea Party Caucus.

Figures don't lie but liars figure. There are over 90 million Americans out of work and the only reason they don't show as unemployed is that they've given up finding work.

That's not the reason there are 90 million Americans out of work. How many of those 90 million are minors? How many are stay-at-home mothers? How many are retired? The labor participation rate is lower because us baby boomers are retiring and thanks to ObamaCare we no longer have to wait until Medicare kicks in. This trend will continue and will only become a crisis if we are stupid enough to continue to discourage immigration. Get rid of immigration and Social Security will collapse.

The middle class has been decimated. The wealthy have a large store of cash they aren't confident enough to re-invest.

Are you getting? The wealthy made a ton during the recession. If they have pulled some money out recently it is because the market is overheated, and the rest of the world is not catching up with the US. If we managed to come out of recession sooner and better than did Europe, with its belt-tightening policies, we must have done something right.

I came out of the recession smelling like a rose, because I wasn't afraid to invest, and I'm not wealthy.

Small businesses are closing because of Obamacare and excessive regulation.

Nothing hurts small businesses more than government shut downs that prevent them from getting small business loans. The fact is that since 2012 more new businesses have been started than have closed down. The number in 2013 was 20% higher than it was in 2009. Optimism is up as well. 50 percent of small business owners say current business conditions are excellent or good (up six points from the same quarter in 2014) and 77 percent of small business owners feel their business’s operations are successful. Business bankruptcies are way down as well.

The coal industry has been decimated because the fool on the hill thinks low cost energy could raise the earth's temperature 1 degree in the next 200 years;

More like eight degrees, but not to worry. We will be out of fossil fuels long before 200 years. However it takes only 2 degrees Celsius to make the earth warmer than we have ever known it as human beings. And we will probably hit that by 2050. When it comes to coal, there is no such thing as clean coal energy. But it is really only in places like Appalachia where the coal industry was badly hit, but not because of Obama's policies. The free-market system destroyed the coal industry there. Renewables and natural gas drove the price of coal down to the point where it no longer made sense to mine in Kentucky. Mining operations shifted to places like Wyoming where it was cheaper. That will remain the case no matter who is president.

despite that fact that every global warming model fails.

And the band played on . . .

We are left with one of two possible conclusions: the president hates this country, or the president is an idiot.

Or maybe he isn't the one who is the idiot.

Do you know anyone who is better of under Obama? I don't.

I am.

Sure, as long as they don't need to eat or pay rent that week.
How did our grandfathers survive?
The entirety of Obamacare was based on a lie. The real number of people who wanted insurance and couldn't get it was more like 3 million.

He learned a more lucrative trade.
He also works with people who have diseases all day long. A single lack of judgement could cost someone a life; it could well be him.
Greater income, but greater responsibility.

You mean to the ripe old age of 55? Ummmm, yeah. They didn't. That's kind of the point. AND when they DID go to the doctor the cost wasn't astronomical.

Earlier you decried the Single Payer system as "socialist", and you think Obamacare a "lie" (even though it is largely a Conservative Republican concept), what is your plan to control healthcare costs and access based around ability to pay?

Or do we say "The Almighty Market will determine this for us!" and then watch some people die in the streets?

The entirety of Obamacare was based on a lie.

If it was a "lie" remember it is a CONSERVATIVE LIE. The individual mandate (the thing you find lack of antecedent basis for in the Constitution) was an idea that the Heritage Foundation came up with in 1994. Obamacare was a direct, national enactment of Romneycare. And it is the only system by which the for-profit insurance companies can still take part in the system. WHICH IS CALLED A MARKET-BASED REFORM.

If you want to decry "socialism" you will HAVE to like Obamacare. You guys on the Right invented it.

Oh and as for all the horrors of Obamacare? Remember that in poll after poll after poll prior to the passage of the ACA up to 85% of Americans wanted all the reforms promised by the ACA so long as it didn't carry the name "Obamacare". EVEN THE REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP.

Eliminate prior conditions? Yup
Eliminate lifetime caps on coverage? Yup
Allow children to remain on parent's coverages longer? Yup
Control spiraling costs? Yup
Ensure more people had coverage? Yup

If you understood how insurance worked you might understand how one can ask an insurance company to increase coverage and control costs. At that point you'd understand what the "individual mandate" actually does. But that requires understanding what a "risk pool" is.

IT'S ALWAYS ABOUT OBAMA! Didn't you get the memo? Obama = All Evil. If Obama came out tomorrow and said he like puppies the GOP would line up to demonize puppies.

We always have those numbers, but that's not why the number is so high.

When President Obama boasts of the number of jobs created during his administration, the numbers he cites may be correct, but he doesn't count the other jobs that were lost during his administration. His critics cite the latter. Both can claim to be right because they are talking about different things.

What has been the net effect? During this administration, the proportion of the working-age population that has a job has fallen to the lowest level in decades. The official unemployment rate does not count the millions of people who have simply given up looking for a job.
source

New estimates derived from the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey by Sentier Research indicate that the real (inflation-adjusted) median annual household income in America has fallen by 4.4 percent during the "recovery," after having fallen by 1.8 during the recession. During the recession, the median American household income fell by $1,002 (from $55,480 to $54,478). During the recovery—that is, from the officially defined end of the recession (in June 2009) to the most recent month for which figures are available (June 2013)—the median American household income has fallen by $2,380 (from $54,478 to $52,098). So the typical American household is making almost $2,400 less per year (in constant 2013 dollars) than it was four years ago, when the Obama "recovery" began.

If you were a supervisor at a coal mine making well over six figures and now you're a greeter at Walmart, Obama gets credit for creating one job and for labor force participation. As I said, figures don't lie but liars figure.
This trend will continue and will only become a crisis if we are stupid enough to continue to discourage immigration.
Is the problem that the Democrats are too stupid to differentiate between legal immigration and illegal immigration, or do they just not care about US immigration laws? Seriously, people sneaking across our border is not immigration. Immigration is legally defined process.

The wealthy made a ton during the recession.
Some did. My boss lost a million dollars. That's lost as in gone forever, not a paper loss.
If we managed to come out of recession sooner and better than did Europe, with its belt-tightening policies, we must have done something right.
Nothing hurts small businesses more than government shut downs that prevent them from getting small business loans.
Bunk! What's killing small business is 85 pages per day of new regulation, Obamacare, increased energy costs due to a deliberate attack on cheaper forms of energy, forced compliance with EPA regulations which go in force before the technology to make them work is proven and a welfare system that takes away the incentive to work. What small business needs is a productive work force. Welfare spending in America exceeds the median income by 20%. Poor people can live better by not working than they can by entering the work force.
We will be out of fossil fuels long before 200 years.
No problem then! Let's continue to use our natural resources while search for affordable alternative forms of energy.
However it takes only 2 degrees Celsius to make the earth warmer than we have ever known it as human beings.
News flash. The earth has been in a cooling cycle for the last 17 years. Not a single global warming model has ever worked. It's just more anti-capitalism drivel. It ranks up there with the population bomb and other fairy tales sold to the gullible by the dishonest.
When it comes to coal, there is no such thing as clean coal energy.
Clean is relative. Most coal plants aren't built in the middle of residential areas. Coal is a natural product, often found just below the surface which is why strip mining is so effective. When you talk about contaminates going into the soil, where do you think the coal was in the first place???
But it is really only in places like Appalachia where the coal industry was badly hit, but not because of Obama's policies.
Tell that story to someone who might believe it.

According to Speaker Boehner, coal is responsible for more than 760,000 American jobs, yet the Obama administration thinks a “war on coal is exactly what’s needed.” If implemented, his action plan will close 288 coal plants across 32 states, a huge roadblock for repairing the American economy. Families across the US pay 11% less for electricity in states where more than half comes from coal. Even the Washington Post conceded in a report this week that the president’s new climate plan will increase consumers’ electricity prices, which could not come at a worse time considering yesterday’s Bankrate.com report finding that three-quarters of Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck.

The President’s plan is indeed designed to sidestep Congress by using a presidential memorandum in contradiction to promises made while campaigning in 2008. The EPA is expected to coordinate action among the States in order to develop specific plans to rein in carbon emissions. The result would be a de facto “Cap & Trade” type mechanism to combat carbon emissions.
source

"It's going to significantly cripple our economy," Loris said. "It will reduce household income as people are forced to spend more money on their energy bills. Anyway you shake this it's a no-win for our economy."

The proposed regulations would put limits on carbon dioxide emissions from existing coal-fired power plants, limit emissions from new plants, and set rules that would force those plants to use "commercially feasible" clean-energy technologies — standards that West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin described as "impossible" to achieve.

The goal, according to Obama, would be to reduce emissions by 17 percent by 2020 and end what the president has described as "limitless dumping of carbon pollution."

"Sadly, instead of moving our country forward like he once promised, the president has decided to turn the lights off in states like West Virginia," Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito said in a statement blasting the proposal.

Americans suffer because Obummer is a global warming believing moron.

The free-market system destroyed the coal industry there. Renewables and natural gas drove the price of coal down to the point where it no longer made sense to mine in Kentucky.
Peddle that lie to someone unfamiliar with coal mining in Kentucky. Job losses here are 100% due to regulation, not competition. I'm glad you're doing well under this socialist. Millions of Americans are suffering.
