i plan on having my kids pursue learning things they will use in life. Do i want my son to grow up to take on a more female role in his home as a man? NO. Knitting, sewing, etc. are traditionally skills that were taught to girls to prepare them for having a household when they married.

boys are traditionally taught skills that will be useful to them when they become men....car repair, lawn maintainance, home do-it-yourself projects.

this makes sense. teach what skills we know our kids will need to be sucessful adults in the female/male roles God has given them.

listen, i grew up in a house of 5 daughters, no boys. us girls ended up mowing the lawn, mulching, etc....I taught my DH how to transplant a tree a few months ago. Before becoming a stay at home mom, I was a homebuilder (yes a female one!) Im not saying that if a boy is taught to knit, he is gonna become gay.

Im saying that God gave us certain roles to fill and they are different. Men and women are not the same. I want to raise my kids knowing this.

I think growing up and doing more "boyish" things out of necessity (no brothers to help in the yard), I now see that there are skills I could have learned instead that would be of great use as a mom and homemaker -I cant sew (maybe a button), or knit or cook anything elaborate. Maybe if I was being taught skills I could use now instead of ones I cant (lawn maintainance -DH's job) I would be better off...

just my 2 cents...

Good post!
In my house - my sister was not allowed to mow the lawn. That was the job of my brother & I. My dad didn't want her to shovel snow either - so we (bro & I) did that. I will raise my two the same way - son will mow the lawn - not daughter.

Because it's a craft which allows a person to express creativity, and in the event of a loss of all our modern conveniences, would be a skill in high demand? Because it's a skill which can be utilised to make extra money?

Never knew "knitters" where in occupational demand...can't remember seeing any in the want ads lately. As far as creativity...I can be creative while watchin football too...(I can eat a chicken wing with ONE hand only...this leaves the other clean for the remote and for drinking a pop.)

Why would a girl be more susceptible to injury than a boy of equal weight and age? Are you saying that the girl would be less muscled (I've seen some very weedy boys playing football)? Less co-ordinated?

No....I never said that, but now that YOU mention it you're probably right...it's a valid opinion.

Soooo... they're both a waste of time

No, watching or playing football is not a waste of time for ME...but knitting would be.

I can't believe you two are debating football versus knitting...

I can't belive this thread is still active...

What the heck is going on...

Are gurls more prone to injury than boys ???
I have no clue how this got asked, or why it is relevant.
But the answer is NO. Gurls have a higher percentage of body fat, more protection. Boys are more prone to injuries.

Is football a waste of time
Football = Physical Exercise, Develope Coordination, Develope Teamwork, Develope Social Skills, Develope physical skills that have potential to make millions of Dollars...

Playing with Doolies = Develope Mental instabilities.

That's an excellent way to make sure they stay virgins till they get married...

And that they never get married.

Knitting. Not for me. But, when I was in Navy boot camp, they handed each of us a sewing kit. I got pretty good at it. For $5 I'd replace a button. For $10, I'd fix a burst seam. No women on combat ships at that time. I was on a carrier and a cruiser. Guys had to do everything - barber, sewing, laundry, cooking, cleaning the head...

When I was growing up, my folks made it crystal clear that there was men's work and there was wimmen's work. Now, I'm a SAHP, and my whole life is wimmen's work. God has a way of getting back atcha...

Still, I won't knit. I got two girls and plan on having no more kids. So, whether or not I b'lieve knitting is for boys is a moot point.

There's a guy at my parents church who is an awesome knitter. He has knitted some amazing things. I think my favourite one is a giant map of Canada, where each of the provinces and territories is filled in by the coat of arms or provincial flag. It looks so cool! He also did one that has all the hockey team logos on it. (it's the size of a quilt I think... the canada map is about the same size). He learned to knit when he was a teenager, and he broke his leg one winter. He needed something interesting to do, and it turns out that it's something he really loves! Oh, and he's definitely not gay. He's married and has 2 girls and a boy.

Hmph! All those Navy sissies!!! *sarcasm alert*

Well, my husband and I live in the bush. He goes out into the woods and chops down trees so we'll have firewood to heat ourselves all winter. At work he cares for a 6 acre island so he is a stonemason, a carpenter, bushwacker, gardener, etc.
He also used to get into at least one bar fight per month before he knew Christ. He usually won.
He used to play rugby and hockey, two of the toughest sports there are.
I once saw him rip a small tree out of the ground, roots and all. (dreamy sigh)
However! He is also a gifted artist whose mediums include drawing, painting with oils and watercolours, scultpure, carving, AND SEWING!
If you told my husband he was a sissy, he'd kick your ass.
And then he'd ask for yours and Jesus' forgiveness. *alert again*^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ :D :D :D
