Godschosengirl said:i plan on having my kids pursue learning things they will use in life. Do i want my son to grow up to take on a more female role in his home as a man? NO. Knitting, sewing, etc. are traditionally skills that were taught to girls to prepare them for having a household when they married.
boys are traditionally taught skills that will be useful to them when they become men....car repair, lawn maintainance, home do-it-yourself projects.
this makes sense. teach what skills we know our kids will need to be sucessful adults in the female/male roles God has given them.
listen, i grew up in a house of 5 daughters, no boys. us girls ended up mowing the lawn, mulching, etc....I taught my DH how to transplant a tree a few months ago. Before becoming a stay at home mom, I was a homebuilder (yes a female one!) Im not saying that if a boy is taught to knit, he is gonna become gay.
Im saying that God gave us certain roles to fill and they are different. Men and women are not the same. I want to raise my kids knowing this.
I think growing up and doing more "boyish" things out of necessity (no brothers to help in the yard), I now see that there are skills I could have learned instead that would be of great use as a mom and homemaker -I cant sew (maybe a button), or knit or cook anything elaborate. Maybe if I was being taught skills I could use now instead of ones I cant (lawn maintainance -DH's job) I would be better off...
just my 2 cents...
Good post!
In my house - my sister was not allowed to mow the lawn. That was the job of my brother & I. My dad didn't want her to shovel snow either - so we (bro & I) did that. I will raise my two the same way - son will mow the lawn - not daughter.
