  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

OK, time for some off-topic, but clean humor.

Anyone remember an old borscht belt stand-up comic named Myron Cohen? He was often on Ed Sullivan, and the Tonight Show, and did ethnic-type jokes. Don't know how religious he was, but he was very funny. One of my favorites:

Three old men, a Catholic, a Protestant, and a Jew were in a hospital ward. They all were very sick and close to the end. The doctor was making his rounds and checked first on the Catholic man.

"Well, Mr. O'Leary--you know you don't have much longer. Do you have any last requests?"

"Yes, please," the old man said. "I'd like to see a priest to give him my confession."

"Of course," the doctor said. "We'll arrange it immediately." Next, he went to the bed of the Protestant.

"Mr. Johnson, you know you don't have much longer. Do you have any last requests?"

"Yes, please," he said. "I'd like to see my wife and children one last time."

"Certainly," the doctor said. "We'll arrange it immediately." Finally, he went to the bed of the Jewish man. "Well Mr. Weinberg, you know you don't have much longer. Do you have any last requests?"

"Yes, please," Mr. Weinberg says. "I'd like to see another doctor." :D

Should blasphemy be a crime punishable by law?

No no and....no. We don't live in a theocracy. And if we did, hopefully it would be overthrown asap.

Also, assuming there was such a law. Considering I've seen Christians blaspheme against other religions...yeah...might not be a good idea.

Even the seemingly innocuous phrase "Holy Cow" is blasphemy, as it mocks Hinduism.

Some genius decided to introduce such a law in Ireland, and last I checked Atheist Ireland is going to release an extremely blasphemous and offensive document mocking every known religious denomination in existance, including Atheist Ireland to cause court confusion. I personally think it would be much entertaining if they made up a religion a la Spaghetti Monster and said Christians were blaspheming the FSM by quoting the Bible, as others have suggested.

It was something that was in our constitution from the unenlightened days when Ireland was to all intents and purposes run from Rome (Literally every law was passed by a religious panel, and a government fell over a health plan that would be made available to all mothers, even those who weren't married!). The law was specifically against blasphemy against the Catholic Church. The only way to repeal something in the constitution is by referendum, and instead of holding a referendum, our minister for justice decided to just start enforcing this archaic law again. Basically if you said anything offensive to any religion out loud or in print, you could be fined or spend time in prison. Cue furious indignation from the 99% of the populace who aren't religious nut jobs.

At the moment the issue still hasn't been resolved, but it seems like we'll just slip back to the way we had things before, with this law still in place, but with nobody mad enough to actually enforce it.

......simple blasphemy and hate speech utilizing blasphemy.

I have to agree with this that the same way we do not like to see hate speech about anyone else or we are in the verge of being called "racists" for doing so; the same way we should not "talk hatefully" about God and regliion in general. If atheist does not have a believe in any god ....then how can Christians and deists be blaspheming??? If you have no faith in any "superior force" how can you be offended about it?

Pretty sure calling us fools is offensive. I might entertain the idea of blasphemy laws as long as it is required by law to edit out offensive elements from the Bible, Qur'an etc.

I couldn't find "The Door" you were referring to but I did find Slice of Laodicea and Blog and Mablog and for the life of me I cannot see where the satire is. (emph. added)

That would be the "Wittenburg Door"
Wittenburg Door
and yes, satire is hard to find on those sites because "Poes Law" is all too true. :sigh:

The bible was the one to give the law....This nation was estalished according to these laws. why then we have "in God we trust" on our money? If we trust in God why would we "offend" God. There are double messages.... If we recognize God as the higher authority and according to the constitution we are one nation under God why should we blaspheme against Him? I seems pretty contradictory to me.

Now if non-believers have rights to be respected that is their constitutional right and calling an atheist a bad name is punishable by law. Why would i want to change the Koran or the Bible as not to blaspheme about non-believers when there is millions of writtings out there unsnsorned about Chistians and any kind of believers? I do no think a solution like that one is possible or propable. ;)
