A bipartisan bill aimed at addressing rising antisemitism on college campuses has been amended with a religious liberty clause to protect statements claiming Jews killed Jesus, a move seen as a concession to Christian conservatives.

The Antisemitism Awareness Act would require the U.S. Department of Education to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism.

Under the said definition, claims of "Jews killing Jesus" used to "characterize Israel or Israelis" or "claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor" can be considered antisemitic and punishable by law.

This Christian conservative thought the gentile Pontus Pilate was involved. It's my understanding that Jesus Christ laid down His life at the cross. Had He not done so, He wouldn't have been crucified. His act of dying a substitutionary death for us on the cross is precisely our means of salvation.

The very claim that protecting that phrase is a concession to Christian conservatives is a rank slur. It's among Christian conservatives where you find many supporters of Israel. But it is nice to know what the Christian Post thinks of Christian conservatives.

Are you saying the NT does not hold accountable the Jewish leadership of the time for "betraying and murdering" Jesus (Ac 7:51-53)?

It protects the Biblical account of Jesus' death.

I respectfully submit if this is about the biblical account, Pontius Pilate may have come from Central Italy. Where the solders who nailed Jesus to the cross came from is anyone's guess. Be that as it may, Jesus Christ said. when Peter, in the Garden of Gethsemane, had cut off an ear of a servant of the high priest:

"Do you think I cannot call to My Father, and He will at once put at my disposal twelve legions of angels?"
See Matthew 26:53.

And as He hung dying on the cross, he said:

"Father, forgive them. They do not know what they are doing."
See Luke 23:34.

Who are we to condemn who Christ Himself forgave?

Given the US government's history of respect (or lack thereof) for religious rights under the first amendment, I'm highly skeptical that such a clause would actually protect Christians.

The bigger issue is that this bill tries to make the Civil Rights Act say something it doesn't. The Act bans discrimination on the basis of race, while criticism of a particular state or a false religion is not criticism of a race.

Some would consider anti-Semitic speech as "hate" speech, but I'm for all speech and don't believe in hate speech. So I don't like this policy!

"Under the said definition, claims of "Jews killing Jesus" used to "characterize Israel or Israelis" or "claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor" can be considered antisemitic and punishable by law.

The updated language, added ahead of a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee vote on Wednesday, states that the legislation will not "diminish or infringe upon any right protected under the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, including ... the free exercise of religion."

Jesus was not referring to the Jews there, he was referring to the (Roman) soldiers who crucified him.
