Friday: Prophecy

The entire book of Joel

____________

I want to remark on an observation I made from Tuesday's reading, 1 Chronicles 21, I believe. It says at the beginning how "Satan stood up against Israel" and convinced King David to take a census of Israel. I wondered at first why such a seemingly simple act would actually be of a Satanic influence and thus displease God, but here is the explanation I can think of: that David was moved to muster the fighting men of Israel for war (against an enemy that apparently did not exist at that time).

I noticed that verse 6 of this chapter says Joab did not number the tribes of Levi and Benjamin among the census, and the NASB denotes the italicized word number as "muster" in literal terms. Also, in the preceding verse 5, the men whom Joab took a census of throughout Israel and Judah were described as men who drew the sword. It's kind of a long shot with just these two pieces of information but my guess is this means David wanted a census taken of the available warriors in Israel as if he were about to muster them for battle ... but against who? Thus perhaps Satan was able to temporarily influence David to an act of paranoia, consequently showing distrust in God's ability (if not promise, if I recall correctly) to shield David from troubles (like enemy nations rising against him) when He so wills. David shows an admirable character here in how he comes before God and pleads with Him to punish only him, David, for his sin rather than all of Israel, admitting that the fault lies purely with David alone.

I'm glad nobody's derailed this thread and it's still going.
sarahs knight regarding Joel I will have to go back and read it, but from what I heard or read David wasn't supposed to number his troops just trust the Lord.

He was kind of outside Gods will when he did that and relying on his own strength rather than the host of angels that are without number. But don't quote me on that, just my perspective.

In Proverbs 23:20-21it is said:
Don't be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat: for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

Churches are not all having communication against much drinking, though some and I can believe many do. There are problems that come from it that is basis for the scriptural warning. I don't know that there are a significant number of churches speaking about not eating so much meat. This is gluttony that is basis for scriptural warning. We don't need much, which believers will still have without any there speaking against, though there is healthiness to not even having meat, while eliminating processed food too. Good reasons as this and more can be considered

Solomon asked for wisdom and not riches, wealth and honor God was so pleased he granted Solomon wisdom PLUS riches, wealth and honor anyway.

Let that be a lesson to us. When we seek an education do we seek that which will make us most wealthy, rich and honroable, the most status symbol degree or the one that will get us the most money? Or do we seek learning to make us wise?

If we seek wisdom first, as we seek righteousness, all things will be added unto us.
