  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Isaiah 22:22-25

And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.

And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.

And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father's house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the vessels of cups, even to all the vessels of flagons. In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall the nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off: for the LORD hath spoken it.

Correct me if I am wrong, I just couldn't help the similarities here.

I notice the similarities between this verse and Matthew 16: 17-19
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Always a favorite passage with me :):

Then it happened that as aJesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and bsinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?” 12But when Jesus heard this, He said, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 13But go and learn cwhat this means: ‘I DESIRE dCOMPASSION, eAND NOT SACRIFICE,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

I don't remember Lebbbaeus? or Bartholemew much. Also, note that Simon was a canaanite. Maybe Jesus called the other Simon 'Peter' because there were two Simons. Apart from the fact that Peter means 'rock'.

there were two James as well.

However I didn't quite understand this: Matthew 8:11-12 when He spoke to the crowd that followed Him.

Well, the more popular interpretation would probably be that it is one of allegedly so many warnings about being a "false Christian" (i.e. not doing everything WE think that you need to do in order to be "true") that they will be surprised to hear themselves condemned to Gehenna and eternal torment at the Judgment instead of welcomed into eternal life by Christ like they thought all their earthly lives like they were going to be, but I don't necessarily go for that.

Another interpretation I remember hearing once a few years ago is well-known OSAS-believing evangelist Charles Stanley's belief that the outer darkness refers to the lowest regions of God's heavenly kingdom that believing but badly-practicing Christians will go to when they thought they would have a high position in eternal life (that high position with many rewards being what was meant by "the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob") and instead they will simply receive eternal life but hardly any rewards, assigned to a lowly estate in the kingdom of heaven, and they will weep and gnash their teeth to discover that they wasted so much of their lives when they could have been actively serving Christ and thus lost out on a lot of good rewards they could have had in eternity otherwise - perhaps also what Jesus meant when by His expression "least in the kingdom of Heaven". .... I don't know; I guess it is a thought, but I doubt Charles Stanley is right on the money there. Still, it's really no less credible than automatically assuming this is a warning about going to hell for not doing enough good as a Christian, which more fundamentalist believers would likely attribute this passage to mean.

I think he was referring to the gentile believers and the jewish ones here.
The jewish ones of course already had the covenant, were circumcised and were born into the kingdom so to speak. The gentiles were not.

jesus turned this upside down and the new covenant is accepted by faith, not circumcision at birth.

Week Four, Sunday: The Epistles

Us Pauline Christians should be most enthusiastic to read more of St. Paul's teachings so focused on faith and grace this morning with Romans 7 through 8. :)

Don't we all empathize with this verse from Paul:

24Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from ethe body of this death? 25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

lol, well, not the wretched man part, as I'm not a man, but I go for the nothing will separate us from the love of God part.

Romans 8:38-39
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

sarahknight is your version missing the ending of verse 25?
