Swine flu is actually MORE benign than regular influenza.
Regular influenza kills several hundred thousand people around the world every year and swine flu has killed just under 5,000.

2. It's no worse than the regular flu and
3. It's only dangerous to little kids, the elderly, and pregnant women

I know a fair number of people who don't vaccinate their children. I disagree with it, but I certainly don't condemn them for it, and I don't consider them ignorant. There's a lot of info in soblessed's post there - you can either look at it or not, but don't sit here and call her ignorant just because she disagrees with you.

This sort of dark-ages mentality IS dangerous. If not vaccinating just endangered the people who were too smug to get vaccinated themselves then I'd really not care that much; Darwin would do his thing and this sort of lunacy would die out after a few generations. But not vaccinating puts other people at risk and THAT above all else drops the people who advocate for this irresponsible fearmongering drives me to consider them ignorant.
PreachersWife.. what kind of issues from the Gardasil vaccination did they have? I'm curious, I don't know anyone who's had that vaccine.
I don't plan on getting the vaccine mostly because I am not in a high risk group and don't come into contact with large numbers of people. I do agree if you are high risk it's worth it to get it.
As for the dangers from the 70s.. remember there was a LOT less oversight on vaccines and medical practices back then. This is NOT the same vaccine, nor does it have the same dangers. I would doubt there is any greater risk getting this vaccine than the yearly flu vaccine.
I see problems in getting vaccinations where proper testing hasn't been done. Several of my friend's daughters and several of my younger girlfriends got that Gardasil vaccination and have issues stemming from it now because of a lack of testing. So yeah, I can see why people are nervous about taking "new" vaccines.
The one flu vaccine I received, five years ago, caused me to get deathly ill and I had a hospital stay of four days. Haven't had a vaccination since, and haven't gotten the flu. Some people don't need vaccinations. Some people do.

Accidental release of a mixture of live H5N1 and H3N2 viruses could have resulted in dire consequences.
While H5N1 doesnt easily infect people, H3N2 viruses do. If someone exposed to a mixture of the two had been simultaneously infected with both strains, he or she could have served as an incubator for a hybrid virus able to transmit easily to and among people.
That mixing process, called reassortment, is one of two ways pandemic viruses are created.

There's only one problem with this story: It's not fiction. Or, at least, the part about live avian flu viruses being inserted into vaccine materials isn't fiction. It's happening right now.
Deerfield, Illinois-based pharmaceutical company Baxter International Inc. has just been caught shipping live avian flu viruses mixed with vaccine material to medical distributors in 18 countries. The "mistake" (if you can call it that, see below...) was discovered by the National Microbiology Laboratory in Canada. The World Health Organization was alerted and panic spread throughout the vaccine community as health experts asked the obvious question: How could this have happened?
"Baxter International Inc. in Austria 'unintentionally contaminated samples with the bird flu virus that were used in laboratories in 3 neighbouring countries, raising concern about the potential spread of the deadly disease'. Austria, Germany, Slowenia and the Czech Republic - these are the countries in which labs were hit with dangerous viruses. Not by bioterrorist commandos, but by Baxter. In other words: One of the major global pharmaceutical players seems to have lost control over a virus which is considered by many virologists to be one of the components leading some day to a new pandemic."
Or, put another way, Baxter is acting a whole lot like a biological terrorism organization these days, sending deadly viral samples around the world. If you mail an envelope full of anthrax to your Senator, you get arrested as a terrorist. So why is Baxter -- which mailed samples of a far more deadly viral strain to labs around the world -- getting away with saying, essentially, "Oops?"
Was the viral contamination intentional?
The shocking answer is that this couldn't have been an accident.Why? Because Baxter International adheres to something called BSL3 (Biosafety Level 3) - a set of laboratory safety protocols that prevent the cross-contamination of materials.

That is patently false. Even if you were vaccinated as a child if you were exposed to smallpox your chances of getting it would be inordinately high, especially if it were one of the Indian strains. Some people should not get vaccines (and doctors tell you this) because of impressiveness drugs or conditions. Actually one of the big problems we are having with MMR right now is that adult hospital workers whos vaccinations have worn off are giving it to kids in hospitals who then give it back to unprotected adults.
Like most things when you weight the costs and benifits you quickly see that vaccinations have saved literally BILLIONS more than they have ever harmed.
I just said that some people should get vaccinations and some people shouldn't - and considering I was mainly specifically talking about the flu vaccine (which is NOT a government required vaccine) I'm not sure why it's such a big deal. I spoke of what happened to me when I got the flu vaccine. What is 'patently false' about my post?
and I've never said otherwise, have I? My children all get vaccinated, I was vaccinated.
Here's something of interest to note, however. While the government requires these vaccinations, many insurance companies don't cover them. We ended up having to go to the Health and Human Services Center to get vaccinations and now that place won't stop harassing us, even after we've moved away and told them as such. We recently got a letter from them stating that they were going to report us because our kids weren't up to date on their vaccinations. Of course they're up to date, they're just not up to date in that particular computer.
