  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hey all,
I am a writer as a hobby. I am wondering...what word processor or office program do you recommend? I personally use google docs myself.

Is Google Docs a good program? Or should I try Libre Office Writer?
If you want privacy and security then you should always prefer offline open source solutions that store your documents on your own hard disk.

If you travel a lot and you do not care about privacy and want your documents to be stored on some company's server, then google docs may be better for you.

Is open office better than libre office? JW
First there was just Open Office. Then its development stopped and its fork was created - Libre Office.

Currently, Libre Office is much more updated, has bugs being fixed etc. Open Office was long time a dead project, but I am not sure how it is today. Libre Office is de facto the standard open source solution for office suite today, is much more supported etc.

LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice, which happened after Oracle bought Sun, and then sold OpenOffice to the Apache Foundation. Ever since, the best-known Linux distributions have switched from including OpenOffice to LibreOffice instead. I'm not a power user for office apps, so any differences in features have not been major enough for me to notice. Both are free.

Scrivener.

Hands down.

It is the absolute best.

Worth every penny :).

I needed a free WP. Thankfully someone I know had an old CD of Works and I was able to make it usable on Windows 10.

That is awesome, I love Retro stuff like that. I use Libreoffice, WPS Office (free), Google Docs, Office 365 (free through through my workplace), and I try out others like Zoho Office (online like Google Docs), StarOffice. Basically whatever is around at the time :). On my old ibook I use an old version of Microsoft Office. I use Linux and I find WPS Office formats bet for the Discussion boards I have to do for work.

Cool man, if you want to explore a bit, try out Manuskript - it's a free, open-source WP that's much like Scrivener- it has the basic functionality that I think makes Scrivener work so well (being able to move your scenes / ideas around easily).

Website: Manuskript

Kylie,
I have Linux and have found that ThunderDocs is a great program. It is a standalone Google Docs platform also available on Windows.

Apache Open Office is still being updated I'm currently using v4.1.6 myself there is a version dated 9/2019 that is 4.1.7 out. I use Google Docs on my phone I've looked for another office program but most cost too much or have ads and I don't use ad based apps on my phone if possible I don't mind spending a few dollars for a decent app but don't see paying a fortune when Google Docs is free.

Charsan, if you use it you need to save the entire extracted folder on your desktop for it to work. But it will work
