• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Ive been at college now since August, Ive dranken like 1x a month. I try to stay sober its just so hard to lock yourself up in your dorm room on friday and saturday by yourself. But when I drink I dont like the feeling of being away from the Lord. It feels ugly. I go to the gym 6x a week and focus on bodybuilding so that helps but still the urge is there. The devil is constanly knocking on the door. Oh yeah and listening to country music makes me wanna drink lol. Any advice?

There are plenty of things to do at college, other than drinking. There are clubs, evangelistic ministries, as well as churches you can get involved in. You make it sound as if your only alternatives on weekends are drinking, or isolating in your room. That is very unrealistic.

If you think you have a drinking problem, call AA, and get to a meeting. There is plenty to do at an AA meeting on weekends.

In the meantime, if you are a Christian, seek the Lord for a ministry to get involved in over the weekends. That will keep you busy.

Also, keep your eyes and ears open in the gym. Don't be surprised if you find like-minded people there.
I gave up on country. Not easy, out here among the pigs, corn and soybeans. The good stuff is overwhelmed by all the odes to alcoholism and adultery.

yeah, I dunno if I can give up my music, its the only thing that gives me joy sometimes. Im working on it, all I can do is try and be victorious thru jesus, I cant do it alone and I dont intend on being 100% perfect.

Think of this challenge as an easy one. Then find ways to prove it is. I know that while you are in teh midst of the battle, it can get overwhelming with the thoughts of the fight, but it your mind is focussing on other things, it will not give this temptation but a scant thought on the off moments of your life.

No more country music. Try pandora .com and type in a good band (that is NOT country). It can come up with music that is similar and you can reject or like the songs so that it only plays similar things that don't cause you to want to drink or what not.

It is hard when the life of everything around you is centered on drinking...are there any christian groups at your school? Cool people who just hang out and do things not focused around drinking?

I went to a country music concert once, out of obligation, not choice. My sister, who has more than 20 years sobriety, is a country fan. I think the singer was Kenny Chesny. The entire second set of music was centered around a bar theme and drinking. One song was about smoking weed with some old country legend. I felt dirty when I left there, and I had a lot of years of sobriety at the time.

Right now, you need to distance yourself from the drinking culture as much as possible. Get to some AA meetings. Meet people who know how to have fun sober. Get involved at a good Bible teaching church, where the Lord is glorified and the Word is preached.

God bless.
