I'm curious, who here wears a beard? And is it trimmed or natural? Any guys have long hair? I've been thinking about growing a beard, not out of convertitis, but just thinking a little small t tradition wouldn't be a bad thing.

Also, our priest has his own personal tradition: he normally wears a goatee, but he doesn't shave at all from the first day of Lent until after Pascha. Anyone know of other people who do anything like that?

I almost always have a beard. I keep it trimmed mostly because my wife will trim it for me in my sleep if I don't keep after it myself. ;) I have short hair because I can't stand it when my hair gets longer. I have very thick and wavy hair and it gets everywhere. I get tired of the hassle way before it gets to the point that I could pull it back into a ponytail to keep it out of the way.

At some point in my teenage years I began growing a lenten beard. I would let my beard grow and then shave it off at Pascha. It was funny how people would come up to me at Pascha and tell me how handsome I looked (which of course meant that I looked terrible for the preceding 40 some days...). I don't think I am going to shave off my beard this year though. My face turns into sandpaper for about 2 weeks while the beard starts to grow back in.

Recently I've been going through periods of having a beard, and then going baby smooth. Right now I'm in the process of growing it in again. When I do have a beard I keep it trimmed, because some of my facial hairs have a tendency to stick straight out making me look like a porcupine. As far as long hair that'll never happen because I am becoming quite bald.

The local monk makes a point of keeping his beard well trimmed during Lent, citing Matthew 6:
"16 "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

"She had a beard, it felt weird, I got my lips stuck in a gate, I had to wait and wait and wait, the kids all laughed!..Usta!" Ok, no more veggie tales lol but actually I'm growing out my beard and hair to effect a monastic look, if I can look like a monastic maybe I can pray like one, or so my theory goes lol The outward part is easy, it's the innward part that's going to take a lot of work.

“You shall not make to yourselves curls and round rasures.” Nor may men destroy the hair of their beards, and unnaturally change the form of a man. For the law says: “Ye shall not mar your beards.” For God the Creator has made this decent for women, but has determined that it is unsuitable for men. - Apostolic Constitutions Book I Sec II

I have a beard and long-ish hair. It is because of convert-itis; I think beards are cool. I love that it isn't about looking "good" - but about looking as God created me to look. I try to avoid totally stereotypical convert things, but this is one I indulge a bit in.

Haha, I love that it is ok for women to shave their beards....shows how this statement has a middle-eastern bias ;)

I've decided to see what I look like with a beard. I'm currently studying abroad in Greece, and it seems like 1/2 the guys here (That is, younger generations like myself) have beards. But of course, theirs don't come even close to matching the beards of the clergy and monastics here in Greece.

But seeing it among the youth here has inspired me to try it. I figure it's more kosher here than in the U.S. so this would be the place to try a beard.

I've had a short full beard for about 20 years now. If I shave it off, I look like I'm 12.

(now lets see if my inserted picture works)
