the army sadly keeps me smooth skinned, but I can grow a pretty rocking beard when I get some leave.

I feel your pain, what happened to the days of us being allowed to have manly whiskers to be feared? Is what I'm asking.

NBC warfare happened. An M-40 mask will not seal with a beard on your face.

That said, SF guys overseas DO grow beards in order to blend in.

Usually, I have a beard, but while I'm unemployed, and may have to interview on short notice, I've shaved my beard. I just have a bit of a goat on my chin for now.

I tried to just trim my beard short before my first interview, but it never really looked right, so I ended up just shaving it off. I blame it on a cheap beard trimmer.

I know, still, a shame.

I have heard this too. Always wanted to do that, thinking about going for SEAL when my contract is up and reclass.

Can you reclass to SEAL now that you're over 27 (or is 28?) ? Or is it different once you're in the SPECWAR community?

Actually, that slipped my mind, I totally forgot about that. :(

Probably should check into it but I think you're right.

Prior to joining the military, I had 5+ inch beard but now I'm all clean shaven (well, I have a 5 o'clock shadow at 10 am, but, you know, I do what I can) and I do miss the beard (as soon as I retire it's coming back with a venegence either that or a Dali stache). My advice for growing and keeping a beard is to maintain it and keep it stylized. No one really likes a mountain man beard. I looked at old photos of beards (mostly those of the European nobility) for ideas of how to keep mine looking nice, styles, etc. Just my two cents. Neat thread.

Do you have any current links to the European beards?

That's not always the case though - sailors, at least here in Canada, can have beards if their gas mask will seal over it, and many do.

Also, our combat engineers tend to have long Orthodox-ish beards. And Sikh soldiers can have them as well.
