Let's see now, February 11th as a national holiday. Governemnt offices closed, stock market closed, no school ... another day off.

Sounds good to me. :)
I really liked the way you did it DaRev.

You had a strong conviction as a Pastor concerning your view on this.
You did not give it up all together. Strong convictions do not just end overnight. Strong convictions often have some truth in them.
(I personally respect Pastors with strong convictions).

You would do baptisms any time, yet would carefully discern if the reason for parents asking to do this on lent Sunday is optional for them or not.
Otherwise weekday is also OK and Sunday simply would not include a usual celebratory mood.

Thanks, :)
Ed

Fish?

You should have seen the looks I got last year during Lent when I ordered a cold cut sub from the Italian pizza shop in town. I couldn't figure why they were looking at me so strange, until I realized...

...it was Friday and I was wearing my collar! ^_^

^_^^_^^_^ I bet you did that on purpose.

Off Topic Rant warning

It's my week to do the court filings for the firm, so at 4:00 on February 11, I bundled up and froze my ears off to walk the 4 blocks to the courthouse only to find the doors locked. My ears and toes were numb by the time I got back to the office.

My original thought was to say I froze my (insert off-color word for bottom) off, but my ears were much colder.

We have a "President's Day" to coincide with both Washington and Lincoln's birthday. Why can't everyone just be off that day? I want a government job.

Don't get me started on courthouse closings. Ours closes at noon for no reason, which can really mess up getting deeds recorded or researched and real estate transactions completed. Funny how this usually happens on a Friday or a Monday when people most need to have things wrapped up the same day.

No problem.
You can have February 11 off next year ...

^_^ You're too cute!

Do you think they'll celebrate it in the UK?
A national holiday is not enough?

Let's see what international holidays that all countries have ... New Years, hm, what else. Can't think of anything else.

I think we need more international holidays.

I think DaRevelation day should be proposed at the next UN meeting.
I think we should have George Clooney presenting this, since they appear to listen to him. ...

I'm just concerned she'll miss out on all the free beer on that day.

Yeah, like I'm gonna have a hard time finding beer in Europe! Of course, the beer in Scotland tastes the best. ;)

Actually, no. There are times when I'm out and about and I forget that I'm wearing my collar. People will say "Hello, Father" and it takes me a couple minutes to realize that they're talking to me! :p
Kids you don't know about? ^_^

I also believe that the TLH has the words can be omitted, rather than the words is omitted. But that's going based on memory - I can't find my TLH hymnal these days...I think the dryer ate it.

We do choose to omit the Alleluia, unless it's Ash Wednesday and the organist forgets that we're not supposed to sing the Alleluia, which has happened before. Another reason why I don't like omitting it, but that's just my personal preference.

Still...the bottom line is that no WELS churches practices waiting on baptisms during Lent. They also allow weddings. Heck, we don't stop funerals during Lent...and for us Christians funerals are celebratory in nature.

The LCMS hymnal, LSB, says in DS 3 & 4 "In Lent the Alleluia is omitted." For DS 1 & 2 there are alternate Verses to be sung before the Gospel reading specifically for Lent that do not include 'Alleluia'.

Both Matins and Vespers also have specific responses for Lent. In Morning Prayer in the opening versicles it specifically says "In Lent the Alleluia is omitted."

In the Service of Prayer and Preaching there are also specific responses for Lent in both the opening versicles and the post reading Responsory. And for the New Testament Canticle, which contains 'Alleluia', it states "During Lent another canticle is sung."

Even in the Funeral Rite, there is a specific response for Lent that does not include the Alleluia.

In TLH, there are alternate "sentences" for the different seasons. Each of them begin and end with "Hallelujah!", with the exception of the Lenten one, which is referred to as "the Passion Season" in TLH.
