Hey everyone.

I was baptized with my wife about 6 years ago. I was around 20 years old at the time, didnt know God, just got married and with a baby on the way. Needless to say we got a divorce. I didnt find God until 2009.

Im curious that I now know God, married again to my ex-wife and going to church, do yall think baptism is something i should do?

If you were just going through the motions last time, then this might be an appropriate thing to do. It may or may not be necessary, but it may well be very meaningful.

If they didn't believe, if they did not make and honest confession of faith... I'd say that's perfectly fine grounds to be baptized now that they really have trusted Christ.

If not, then is baptism nothing more than salvation by works? Believe or not, get dunked and you're in?

God is faithful to complete the work He began in you. The first time around, when you really didn't know Him and were baptized the work had already begun. At this point in your life He is just further along in the process than He was then.

I don't see what the point of another baptism is. You can't be more saved than you already were.

No, you should not get baptized again...God did it right the first time and you received all of the benefits He promised by His Word through those baptismal waters.

I see baptism as a public declaration of faith, and a symbolic washing of sin to accept the "new man" of our redeemed life. With that perspective, there is no need to be baptized twice, because the public already saw you declare your faith.

But when a person's reputation has been criticized due to hard circumstances like divorce, the public sometimes assumes you have lost the faith or lived under sin... and it can be a repairing move to do some sort of open confession. It helps slow down the gossip.

That is certainly not a reason to go through a sacred ceremony again-- but if you are feeling like you need to, I don't see harm in it.

Baptism is something that should only be done once.

Christian Baptism is always administered with water in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. From its earliest days the Church has believed that this sacrament was commanded by Christ as the divinely appointed means of initiation into the Christian community and therefore a person can be baptised only once.
Methodist Worship Book

In Acts 2 we read that Peter said "Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit..."

A re-baptism suggests a belief that God didn't quite manage to forgive you, nor that He was able to give you the Holy Spirit.

I'll pray for you on your journey :prayer:

Baptism is a confession of taking a stand with Christ against the unbelieving world. It is not salvation. You may have fallen in the Christian walk, but you have recovered and are seeking to go on. Your original desire is still honored, I am sure.
